This is something that I definitely want to make you aware of. I also want to thank ADA News for covering this story. This is another example of the value that comes from the American Dental Association. I learned about this story from their Morning Huddle e-newsletter. News like this story are important for the profession. The next time you hear someone say, "What does the ADA really do for me?", be sure to tell them about this.
Of course, here in the US a defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty. However, since this story applies to products used in implant cases, it's something that has the potential to affect the care delivered to patients. If a doctor is using any of these products they need to be aware of it. That's the purpose of this post.
On August 6, 2026 the US Department of Justice filed an injunction against dental manufacturer SteinerBio. The company manufactures and sells several products, some used for bone grafting.
The DOJ is seeking a "permanent injunction" against the company. The company and the DOJ have been in a regulatory standoff for nearly 7 years. I want to again emphasize "innocent until proven guilty", but this is definitely something doctors need to be aware of so they can make their own decision on whether to use the products or not.
