More Links Between Oral Health and Heart Disease

The American Dental Association (ADA) has a great site for both patients *and* doctors.  It’s called and is great resource for all things dental.  For patients, I feel the best part of the site is that it is truly information that you can trust from a scientific point of view.  
For several years now there has been a great deal of discussion regarding if oral health can be linked to problems with cardiac health.  The mouth and heart are part of the same organism, so many feel that one can affect the other and I happen to be one of those doctors.  Oral bacteria has been cultured from atherosclerotic plaque and that is just one of the things that concern me.

Take care of your your heart?

The American Heart Association published a Statement in April 2012 supporting an association between gum disease and heart disease. The article noted that current scientific data do not indicate if regular brushing and flossing or treatment of gum disease will decrease the incidence, rate or severity of the narrowing of the arteries (called atherosclerosis) that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. However, many studies show an as-yet-unexplained association between gum disease and several serious health conditions, including heart disease, even after adjusting for common risk factors.

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that support the teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. The ADA and MouthHealthy believe that the most important thing you can do to avoid gum disease and maintain good oral health (including prevention of tooth decay or cavities) is:

  • Brush teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for oral examinations and professional cleanings.

OSHA Announces Deadline Delays for their Electronic RecordKeeping Sandard

The regulation was to have employers with 20 or more workers submit OSHA form 300A logs for 2016 electronically.  300A is the blog for tracking recordable injuries and illnesses.  300A can be downloaded from this link as a PDF if you’d like to read it or have a copy.  This was originally supposed to start on July 1, 2017 but was pushed back with a new compliance date of December 1, 2017.  Obviously this only applies to larger dental offices, such as corporate clinics.

Rimowa Brings Technology to Suitcases

I love it when technology surprises me and this is one of those times.
As most of you know, I’m a bit of a road warrior, making about 2 trips per month for speaking and consulting events.  Needless to say, those trips require suitcases and suitcases require airports.  Now my trivia based mind can tell you that the average American spends about 5 years waiting in queues, but I wonder how much more that is for those of us who travel a lot.  One of the worst parts about airports is the lines.
However, suitcases from Rimowa are working to remove one of those queues from us travelers.  If you travel you know that usually once you check-in, if you have a bag to check you then wait in a line to have the baggage sticker placed on your suitcase.  This line can, on occasion, be huge and a tremendous time waster when you are trying to get to your gate.
Rimowa suitcases have a built-in screen that displays your luggage tag info, without the sticker!!!  You simply log in from their app and your travel info is sent to partner airlines.  Once this happens, the phone sends the luggage info to the suitcase screen via Bluetooth.  Pretty coo, huh?
Of course this system is in its early stages and so far only 2 airlines (Eva Air and Luftansa) are using it, but it IS being explored by United currently.
Needless to say, when I need a new suitcase, I’m going to be doing some shopping next time.

Here is some pretty interesting info on CEREC from Dentsply Sirona.  The company has been pushing hard on innovation lately, and this is good proof of that.  If you are a CEREC owner, you’ll be excited about this update. 

With the market launch of the new CEREC Software 4.5 and the opening of the CEREC system to export data from the digital impression, Dentsply Sirona has satisfied two key wishes expressed by dentists. This software takes the system operation to a whole new level – it is now simpler than ever to plan and produce a CEREC restoration. For new users, this is a clear and well-supported system; for more experienced users, the special features are easy to find and apply, meaning everyone benefits from enhanced performance. Since initiated processes continue to run in the background, the entire procedure is significantly quicker. In addition, opening the system to allow the export of scan data makes new options available. Dentists can now use the CEREC Omnicam scans in cooperation with their dental laboratory or other clinical planning software.

Fewer steps, automatic detection and maximum precision

This new simplicity is the product of intelligent software tools. Compact tool bars that show all options at a glance cut down the time spent searching and scrolling. Many of the steps run automatically: Restorations, such as inlays, onlays, crowns and veneers, are automatically detected by the software and the insertion axis is also defined automatically. Improved safety and security come from the further improved biogeneric initial proposals that match the patient's needs perfectly, even in difficult anatomic situations, based on the Biojaw algorithm. To assess the tooth color, the software uses the "Shade Analysis" function to analyze the scan and indicate the tooth color as a Vita Classic or Vita 3D Master shade. Overall, this allows the dentist to make an even more reliable assessment of the intraoral situation.

The restoration is then prepared in just two steps instead of four, the model axis is set and the preparation margin is entered using automatic margin finder – that's it. After checking the occlusal and proximal contacts of the desired restoration, the milling and grinding process can be started. Thanks to the even further refined milling strategy, the fit of final restorations has been further improved, particularly for complex constructions.

American Academy of Pediatrics Recommends No Fruit Juice For Children Under 1 Year

For the past several years, there has been a debate about the benefits of fruit juice for children.  While many have thought of it as “natural” and being something healthy since it is made from fruit, many others have lamented it’s high sugar content and high number of calories per serving.  Many moms had begun limiting their kids juice intake, while others had taken a more liberal approach.
Now comes word from the American Academy of Pediatrics that fruit juice should be limited in kids.
The policy statement recommendations include:

  • Intake of juice should be limited to, at most, 4 ounces daily for toddlers age 1-3. For children age 4-6, fruit juice should be restricted to 4 to 6 ounces daily; and for children ages 7-18, juice intake should be limited to 8 ounces or 1 cup of the recommended 2 to 2 ½ cups of fruit servings per day.
  • Toddlers should not be given juice from bottles or easily transportable “sippy cups” that allow them to consume juice easily throughout the day. The excessive exposure of the teeth to carbohydrates can lead to tooth decay, as well. Toddlers should not be given juice at bedtime.
  • Children should be encouraged to eat whole fruits and be educated about the benefits of the fruit as compared with juice, which lacks dietary fiber and may contribute to excessive weight gain.
  • Human milk or infant formula is sufficient for infants, and low-fat/nonfat milk and water are sufficient for older children.
  • Consumption of unpasteurized juice products should be strongly discouraged for children of all ages.
  • Children who take specific forms of medication should not be given grapefruit juice, which can interfere with the medication’s effectiveness. In addition, fruit juice is not appropriate in the treatment of dehydration or management of diarrhea.

ADA Lets Member Dentists Know the FTC Provides New Resource for COPPA Compliance

For those of you unfamiliar with it, there is a new federal law on the books called COPPA.  It stands for Children’s Online Private Protection Act.  According to the ADA News, it is “a federal law designed to put parents in control of the online information that is collected from their children.”
Since some dental practice websites do require some type of personal identifiers, they will be covered by COPPS.  Being as it is something most dentists are not going to be familiar with, the ADA was nice enough to do some research and find an online resource created by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) that provides valuable information on how to be in compliance.  
Basically there are six steps that must be completed to ensure compliance.  They are:
  • Determine if your company is a website or online service that collects personal information from kids under 13.
  • Post a privacy policy that complies with COPPA.
  • Notify parents directly before collecting personal information from their kids.
  • Get parents' verifiable consent before collecting personal information from their kids.
  • Honor parents' ongoing rights with respect to personal information collected from their kids.
  • Implement reasonable procedures to protect the security of kids’ personal information.

Anthem Pays $115 Million to Settle 2015 Data Breach Lawsuit

In 2015, Anthem suffered a data breach that resulted in the theft of nearly 80 million (you read that correctly) records containing personal information of members as well as employees.  The company had an insurance policy for this type of problem, but unfortunately it only covered $100 million meaning the company is on the hook for $15 million.  This is the largest payout in history for a company that has experienced a hack and data theft.
I’ve mentioned before how the weakest security link is almost always the human beings that are using the technology.  Guess how this whole thing got started.  Yup, a phishing email sent to an employee who opened an attachment in the email.  This was a simple password hack, but enabled the bad guys to have access to the Anthem system which, BTW the company failed to encrypt.  Oh, and they also waited several weeks before notifying the affected individuals.  This is pretty much a trifecta of what NOT to do.
Here is the statement from Anthem:

Anthem has reached a settlement to completely resolve the multidistrict class action litigation relating to the 2015 cyber attack against the company. The settlement, which is subject to approval by the court, does not include any finding of wrongdoing, and Anthem is not admitting any wrongdoing or that any individuals were harmed as a result of the cyber attack. Nevertheless, we are pleased to be putting this litigation behind us, and to be providing additional substantial benefits to individuals whose data was or may have been involved in the cyber attack and who will now be members of the settlement class.

When Anthem discovered the cyber attack in 2015, the company offered two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services to all individuals whose data may have been impacted. As part of this final resolution of the litigation, class members can receive an additional two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services, along with other significant benefits.

Anthem has agreed to pay a total of $115 million to resolve the litigation. Those funds will pay for the additional two years of credit monitoring and identity protection services, and will also benefit class members in several other ways.  In particular, while there is no evidence that any data impacted by the cyber attack has ever been sold or used to commit fraud, Anthem has agreed that $15 million of the fund will be allocated to pay actual out-of-pocket costs, up to a set amount, that  class members claim they incurred due to the cyber attack. Class members who already have credit services can submit a claim to receive alternative cash compensation instead of receiving the credit services provided by the settlement. The costs of sending notice to class members, administering claims, and the class members’ attorneys’ fees are also included in this total amount. The benefits described above, however, will not be available until the settlement has been finally approved by the Court and any appeals have been concluded.

Anthem has had, for many years, a strong information security program to protect the personal data entrusted to us. As we have seen in cyber attacks against governments and private sector companies including Anthem over the past few years, many cyber threat actors are increasingly sophisticated and determined adversaries. Anthem is determined to do its part to prevent future attacks. To that end, as part of the settlement, Anthem has agreed to continue the significant information security practice changes that we undertook in the wake of the cyber attack, and we have agreed to implement additional protections over the next three years.

A third-party settlement administrator will manage the settlement, which will be overseen by the court in this litigation. The settlement administrator will be the best resource for questions pertaining to the settlement agreement, including how to register for the credit monitoring or identity protection services offered or how to submit claims for out-of-pocket costs or alternative compensation. If the Court preliminarily approves the settlement, the settlement administrator will set up a website regarding this settlement, and we will update this page with a link to that website and a phone number for the settlement administrator as soon as those are available.

Additionally customers of Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies who used their Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance in one of fourteen states where Anthem, Inc. operates may be impacted and are also eligible: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
