FAA Allows Southwest to Continue Flying Planes that Missed Inspections

With the Chicago Dental Society's MidWinter Meeting happening this week, dentists from all over the country will be heading to The Windy City to see & enjoy one of the top 3 dental meetings in the US.

Because of that, I thought I'd make today's post about the FAA's decision yesterday regarding the Southwest fleet.

I will state the  most important part of this post right here: The FAA has ruled that the Southwest planes will be allowed to fly.

So if you are planning on Southwest to get you to Chicago, everything is just fine.

What's the news behind all of this?

Simply put, Southwest somehow missed doing an inspection on some of their jets.  The inspection was checking on a hydraulic system used to control the plane's rudder if the main system fails.  On Tuesday, Southwest somehow figured out the inspections had been missed.  Upon realizing the snafu, Southwest immediately grounded the involved planes and notified the FAA.

The grounding put 128 planes, about 20% of the planes the company owns, out of service.  That, of course, resulted in a scheduling nightmare of Stephen King proportions.

80 Southwest flights were cancelled on Tuesday and another 19 will probably be cancelled today (Wednesday February 25).  I've been traveling when something like this happens (for me it was control tower fire at Chicago's Midway) and believe me when I say the chaos and stress it creates is palpable.

I've got to give the FAA a pat on the back for what they did here.  Realizing the problems the grounding was causing, FAA consulted with Southwest and Boeing (the manufacturer of the aircraft involved) and gave the go ahead for the planes to continue to fly while the inspections were made.  The inspection process cannot be too involved as Southwest has stated "a good portion" of them have already been made and that more would be made overnight.

That means that the affect on passengers will be minimal.  That's great news for those of us involved in the Chicago MidWinter Meeting (I'm doing 2 lectures on Saturday).

This whole saga, while not without it stresses and angst, gives me a bit of a "feel good" moment.  By that I mean Southwest did the right thing when they realized what had happened.  Even though they knew there would be bad press, they grounded the planes and called the FAA.  They didn't try to hide it or do the inspections on the sly.  They owned up to the problem... and they fixed it.  They did the right thing & I respect that.  Too often today we see just the opposite.

For the FAA, they saw what would happen if one-fifth of the Southwest fleet was out of service.  They consulted with the plane's creator & fabricator, determined there was minimal risk, and worked with Southwest to make sure the inspections were done quickly while still keeping planes in the air.

A good handling of a tough situation by all involved.  Now let the Chicago MidWinter begin!!!

Should You Floss Before or After You Brush Your Teeth?

For years the debate has raged back and forth over whether it's better to floss before you brush or afterwards.

Now Self magazine has the answer... or at least they've weighed in with an opinion from a dentist.

Personally, I've always advocated before.  My logic has been that flossing gets plaque & debris out from in between your teeth, but it's still there... somewhere.

Brushing then helps remove the material completely and then you spit it all in the sink.

Am I right here?

Floss before you brush—it loosens the food and plaque between teeth and under gums, so brushing can sweep them away, says Matthew Nejad, D.D.S., a dentist in private practice in Beverly Hills, California, and faculty member at the University of Southern California Ostrow School of Dentistry.
Of course any flossing is better than none (your toothbrush can’t access the tight spaces between your teeth and in gums), but waiting until after brushing allows particles to settle back into the teeth. Getting rid of them is key to prevent cavities, bad breath and gum disease. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day. (Extra credit if you floss every time you brush.) To remind yourself, stash floss by your toothbrush, where you’ll see it. The extra 30 seconds it adds to your morning and evening routine will be well worth it.

AV-Test ”Best Protection” award for F-Secure

For years now I've been raving about the great protection given by antivirus company F-Secure.  I've used them a long time and have always been impressed with the performance & value of the program.

Strongest Biological Material is... Limpet Teeth

Who would have thought this?  For several years, scientists thought the strongest biological material was spider web.  Now it turns out that it is a tooth!

A sea snail called a Limpet is the owner of these little miracles... and I *do* mean little.  The teeth are only roughly 1 millimeter in height.  Tiny but tough.
Why are these teeth so strong?  Well limpets attach themselves to rocks that are underwater & near the shore.  The feed on algae.   So when they eat, the scrape their teeth on the hard surface of the rock.  Therefore their teeth *have* to be strong.  Stronger than human teeth... stronger than any other teeth known to man.

Perhaps we can learn something from this.  Maybe there's a new really tough material on the  horizon.  I'll leave that to the researchers, however, this is a really cool & interesting discovery.

Sony's SmartEyeglass on sale for $840

As Google shelves/delays its Google Glass project, Sony has stepped up into the wearable computing fray with their idea for a product called SmartEyeglass.

Currently the "screen" only shows up in green and the battery life is a meager 2.5 hours.

The device will interface with your smartphone allowing you to see apps on your phone right in front of your eyes, of course it will only be in the color green.

It also has a wire attached to it for controlling the specs.

All things considered, I can't see them selling very many of these.  Seems to me there are too many drawbacks to be seriously considered as a "must have".  Google Glass was a better product and Google is re-working that concept so I don't see Sony doing any better.

Think You're Safe from the NSA? Think Again...

There are some smart people at the NSA.  The agency has people with such computer skills they make Bill Gates look like a preschooler.

In order to protect the United States from a cyber attack, the NSA has developed ways to cyber attack from their end as well.  It seems that Forbes has found some incredible information that was discovered by the Kaspersky antivirus company.

One of the more startling components, according to the Russian anti-virus provider, was able to alter the hard drive firmware of more than dozen different hard drive brands, including Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba, Maxtor and IBM. This would have given the attackers persistence on victims’ PCs and allowed them to set up secret data stores on the machines, only accessible to the hackers.

The article makes for some fascinating reading and it is just a little bit scary as well.  Basically, no one  knows how to hack better than the NSA... and if they hack you, chances are you won't even know it.

Auto insurers accused of pushing cheap and sometimes dangerous repairs

In the past few years, the American public has heard a lot about health insurance.  Whether it's from their employers, Obama care, or the insurance companies themselves, there has been a deluge of information.

CNN recently posted a very interesting article on the auto insurance industry and how they are trying (and many times succeeding) in forcing repair shops to use inferior parts to save money and increase the insurance company's profits.

I have no problem with a business making a profit.  If you don't make a profit you won't be in business very long.  However, I am opposed to making profits at the expense of the health and welfare of those who put their trust in you.

Read this article and then think about your health insurance.  They wouldn't try to do this with your health or dental coverage, would they?...  Of course not.  Sarcasm intentional.

Resilon/Real Seal is Going Away

The word from the folks at Sybron Endo is that the bonded obturation product, Real Seal (which is actually Resilon) is going to  be discontinued.  I've heard a couple of reasons why, but the bottom line is the product will not be available in the future.

For those of you looking for a similar idea of bonded obturation might consider looking at the Ultradent Endo System.  It uses a bonded resin sealer and gutta percha points coated with UDMA so that they bond to the sealer.

BrushyBall, LLC Launches Kickstarter Campaign to Improve Children’s Dental Health

Funds Will Be Used to Manufacture and Market 
the Innovative and Educational BrushyBall Tooth Brush Training Toy 

Birmingham, MI – February 4, 2014 – BrushyBall LLC today launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the manufacturing and marketing of its innovative and educational tooth brush training coach for children. Kickstarter is a global crowdfunding platform based in the United States whose mission is to help bring creative projects and products to life. 
The educational toy also named BrushyBall was developed by entrepreneur Robert Malen, who learned that singing toothbrushes with built-in timers did not teach his 4-year old daughter how to properly brush her teeth. “When I asked her if she brushed her teeth, she could truthfully answer yes because she brushed until the music stopped,” explained Malen. “However, when I watched her brush, I could plainly see she was only focusing on a few teeth.” 
Malen set out to design a better product that would teach proper brushing technique in a fun way.  After five years of self-funded research and development, Malen produced the prototype for BrushyBall, a sink-top toy that uses a follow the leader sequence to demonstrate and encourage proper tooth brushing – Brushy Ball also serves as a convenient toothbrush holder. According to Malen, “BrushyBall is by no means a solution in search of a problem. In fact, a recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control showed a disturbing uptick in the number of cavities among children aged 5 to 19 years old and within that group, the largest increase was in the 3 to 5 year old age group. Ensure Your Toothbrush is Ready to do Its Job... Check Out Quip

Any dentist will tell you that your home care is only as good as your toothbrush.  If you are using a brush with worn out bristles (does yours look like you've been scrubbing the floor with it?) then no amount of "good brushing technique" can compensate.

For those of you who spend a fair amount of time "on the go" and also spend a fair amount of time using different pieces of tech while "on the go", this may be just what you're looking for.

White House Announces Precision Medicine Initiative

This was mentioned during the State of the Union Address, but I wondered what it exactly would mean.  After doing a little digging I found the following info, direct from the White House.  Give it a look.  It makes for some interesting reading, although like almost any government program/initiative, the devil is in the details and we have few details to review at this time...

Building on President Obama’s announcement in his State of the Union Address, today the Administration is unveiling details about the Precision Medicine Initiative, a bold new research effort to revolutionize how we improve health and treat disease.  Launched with a $215 million investment in the President’s 2016 Budget, the Precision Medicine Initiative will pioneer a new model of patient-powered research that promises to accelerate biomedical discoveries and provide clinicians with new tools, knowledge, and therapies to select which treatments will work best for which patients.
Most medical treatments have been designed for the “average patient.” As a result of this “one-size-fits-all-approach,” treatments can be very successful for some patients but not for others.  This is changing with the emergence of precision medicine, an innovative approach to disease prevention and treatment that takes into account individual differences in people’s genes, environments, and lifestyles.  Precision medicine gives clinicians tools to better understand the complex mechanisms underlying a patient’s health, disease, or condition, and to better predict which treatments will be most effective. 
Advances in precision medicine have already led to powerful new discoveries and several new treatments that are tailored to specific characteristics of individuals, such as a person’s genetic makeup, or the genetic profile of an individual’s tumor.  This is leading to a transformation in the way we can treat diseases such as cancer.  Patients with breast, lung, and colorectal cancers, as well as melanomas and leukemias, for instance, routinely undergo molecular testing as part of patient care, enabling physicians to select treatments that improve chances of survival and reduce exposure to adverse effects.  
The potential for precision medicine to improve care and speed the development of new treatments has only just begun to be tapped. Translating initial successes to a larger scale will require a coordinated and sustained national effort.  Through collaborative public and private efforts, the Precision Medicine Initiative will leverage advances in genomics, emerging methods for managing and analyzing large data sets while protecting privacy, and health information technology to accelerate biomedical discoveries.  The Initiative will also engage a million or more Americans to volunteer to contribute their health data to improve health outcomes, fuel the development of new treatments, and catalyze a new era of data-based and more precise medical treatment. 
Key Investments to Launch the Precision Medicine Initiative:
Complementing robust investments to broadly support research, development, and innovation, the President’s 2016 Budget will provide a $215 million investment for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), together with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to support this effort, including:
  • $130 million to NIH for development of a voluntary national research cohort of a million or more volunteers to propel our understanding of health and disease and set the foundation for a new way of doing research through engaged participants and open, responsible data sharing.
  • $70 million to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), part of NIH, to scale up efforts to identify genomic drivers in cancer and apply that knowledge in the development of more effective approaches to cancer treatment.
  • $10 million to FDA to acquire additional expertise and advance the development of high quality, curated databases to support the regulatory structure needed to advance innovation in precision medicine and protect public health.
  • $5 million to ONC to support the development of interoperability standards and requirements that address privacy and enable secure exchange of data across systems.
Objectives of the Precision Medicine Initiative:
  • More and better treatments for cancer: NCI will accelerate the design and testing of effective, tailored treatments for cancer by expanding genetically based clinical cancer trials, exploring fundamental aspects of cancer biology, and establishing a national “cancer knowledge network” that will generate and share new knowledge to fuel scientific discovery and guide treatment decisions. 
  • Creation of a voluntary national research cohort: NIH, in collaboration with other agencies and stakeholders, will launch a national, patient-powered research cohort of one million or more Americans who volunteer to participate in research.  Participants will be involved in the design of the Initiative and will have the opportunity to contribute diverse sources of data—including medical records; profiles of the patient’s genes, metabolites (chemical makeup), and microorganisms in and on the body; environmental and lifestyle data; patient-generated information; and personal device and sensor data.  Privacy will be rigorously protected.  This ambitious project will leverage existing research and clinical networks and build on innovative research models that enable patients to be active participants and partners.  The cohort will be broadly accessible to qualified researchers and will have the potential to inspire scientists from multiple disciplines to join the effort and apply their creative thinking to generate new insights. The ONC will develop interoperability standards and requirements to ensure secure data exchange with patients’ consent, to empower patients and clinicians and advance individual, community, and population health.
  • Commitment to protecting privacy: To ensure from the start that this Initiative adheres to rigorous privacy protections, the White House will launch a multi-stakeholder process with HHS and other Federal agencies to solicit input from patient groups, bioethicists, privacy, and civil liberties advocates, technologists, and other experts in order to identify and address any legal and technical issues related to the privacy and security of data in the context of precision medicine.
  • Regulatory modernization: The Initiative will include reviewing the current regulatory landscape to determine whether changes are needed to support the development of this new research and care model, including its critical privacy and participant protection framework.  As part of this effort, the FDA will develop a new approach for evaluating Next Generation Sequencing technologies — tests that rapidly sequence large segments of a person’s DNA, or even their entire genome. The new approach will facilitate the generation of knowledge about which genetic changes are important to patient care and foster innovation in genetic sequencing technology, while ensuring that the tests are accurate and reliable.
  • Public-private partnerships: The Obama Administration will forge strong partnerships with existing research cohorts, patient groups, and the private sector to develop the infrastructure that will be needed to expand cancer genomics, and to launch a voluntary million-person cohort.  The Administration will call on academic medical centers, researchers, foundations, privacy experts, medical ethicists, and medical product innovators to lay the foundation for this effort, including developing new approaches to patient participation and empowerment.  The Administration will carefully consider and develop an approach to precision medicine, including appropriate regulatory frameworks, that ensures consumers have access to their own health data – and to the applications and services that can safely and accurately analyze it – so that in addition to treating disease, we can empower individuals and families to invest in and manage their health.
