Zhermack Introduces New Elite® Master Dental Stone

Elite Master Photo.jpg

Ideal for Fixed and Removable Prosthesis Models and Implantology Cases

River Edge, NJ (March 29, 2012) Zhermack Inc., a company that specializes in the production of materials and equipment for dental practices and dental laboratories, recently introduced its new Elite® Master dental stone.  Elite Master is an extra-hard, resin-reinforced dental die stone that is ideal for use in the fabrication of fixed and removable prosthesis models and implantology cases.

Elite Master is an extra-hard stone that is characterized by its superior solidity and low degree
of expansion.  Its high resistance to compression and abrasion makes Elite Master ideal for the preparation of dies used in the fabrication of fixed and removable prostheses, chrome, and various base models created in the dental laboratory setting.  It has an exclusive formulation, including a resin filler that gives each model fabricated with Elite Master a compact, marble-
like finish.

Unique resin particles within the Elite Master formulation provide high elasticity and splintering resistance for optimal andprecise alterations, such as chamfering and trimming.  The resin particles also repel and reduce water absorption, guaranteeing the model will maintain its original intended structure without being affected by any potentially damaging exterior conditions.

Unlike many dental die stones currently on the market, Elite Master has a formaldehyde-free formula.  Technicians who handle the Elite Master can be certain there are no harmful or toxic ingredients that might endanger the health or safety of the user.

Moreover, Elite Master is specially formulated to be extremely CAD/CAM-friendly.  Elite Master is available in three colors – desert sand, sandy brown, and soft grey – that are perfectly detected by all laser and optical scanners.

For more information about Elite Master, please call 1-877-819-6206 or visit

Eco-Friendly Orthodontist in Maryland Helps Patients Save Nearly 300 Thousand Gallons of Water

Media contact:

Marcella Lentini

Dr. Mary Trahar has helped 200 patients save water by reminding them to turn off the tap when they brush

Annapolis, MD (March 22, 2012) Dr. Mary C. Trahar of Annapolis, Maryland wins the Eco-Dentistry Association’s World Water Day Challenge, encouraging patients to turn off the tap while brushing their teeth to save 90 glasses of clean, drinkable water every day. In addition to having the highest number of submissions for the challenge, Dr. Trahar has signed up a cumulative 200 patients for the Eco-Dentistry Association’s “Save 90 a Day!” campaign to date. This represents saving an aggregate of roughly 300,000 gallons of clean, drinkable water each year, or enough to fill approximately 15 mid-sized swimming pools.

The Eco-Dentistry Association offered the World Water Day Contest as a challenge for every one of its 700 members to sign up as many patients as possible for the “Save 90 a Day!” campaign, which began in 2010 as a way to educate the public on the water savings achieved by turning off the tap while brushing. Joining the campaign is free, no special equipment is required, and anyone with access to a computer can participate.

In addition to creating the “Save 90 a Day!” campaign, the Eco-Dentistry Association promotes World Water Day as a way to raise awareness on water conservation and remind dental professionals of the powerful role they play in changing patient behavior through education. “By pledging to ‘Save 90 a Day!’ and encouraging other to do the same, we can create a major positive impact on conserving water, one of Earth’s most precious resources and one without which we could not practice modern dentistry,” says EDA co-founder Ina Pockrass.

Beyond helping patients reduce their water footprint, Dr. Trahar’s office has effectively educated patients on its own eco- friendly initiatives as well as steps that each individual patient can take to live a greener life. The green office has chosen to implement environmentally friendly techniques, procedures and materials in order to reduce waste and pollution, conserve energy and water, and recycle when possible; while promoting individual health and wellness for its patients.

About the EDA

The EDA offers dental professionals’ practical tips on incorporating eco-friendly dental methods and practices, and offers the public access to dental professionals that share their values of wellness and environmental stewardship. The organization was co-founded by Dr. Fred Pockrass, a dentist, and his entrepreneur wife, Ina Pockrass, who together created the model for eco-friendly dentistry, and operate their own award-winning dental practice in Berkeley, California, the first in the country to be certified as a green business. They formed the organization to stimulate a movement in the dental industry to employ environmentally-sound practices, like reducing waste and pollution, saving energy, water and money, incorporating wellness-based methods and the best technological advances in dentistry.

Dentsply Caulk Updates SureFil SDR Flow

Surefil SDR.jpg
The success of SureFil SDR Flow has been pretty amazing in dentistry.  The product has gained wide acceptance and has been used for over 10 million applications worldwide.
While this is obviously a reason for celebration by the folks at Caulk, they haven't just sat back and rested.  They've continued to look at ways in the lab to make the product even better.
To that end, I've received word from Dentsply that there have been some improvements to this already outstanding product.  They are as follows:
  • SureFil SDR Flow is now available in syringe delivery as well as compile delivery
  • The product can now be used as a pit and fissure sealant
  • It can be used as not just a base, but as a complete restorative material for Class I restorations
  • Filling of defects and undercuts in crown, inlay, and only preparations (Core Build Up)

You can check out the website for more info and to also request a free sample of the  product in the new syringe delivery.

Thanks and Congratulations to the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting for 100 Years of Education

Sorry for the lack of posts the last few days.  I've been in Atlanta at the 100th Thomas P Hinman Dental Meeting.

The Hinman is always an amazing meeting, but this year they pulled out all the stops for an extravaganza that probably won't be equalled.  I was fortunate enough to get an invite to lecture at the Hinman and that allowed me a unique privilege.  On Thursday evening I got a chance to meet and get a photo with former first lady Barbara Bush who gave the keynote address.

The Hinman prides itself on southern hospitality and they certainly do an excellent job of it and this year was no exception.  This meeting has grown to be the preeminent meeting in the Southeast through their amazing dedication to treating their guests so well.

A big thanks to everyone who attended my courses and to the folks that make the Hinman such a special meeting.  I'm truly blessed to call you all my friends!

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot

iPad Thermal.jpg

Well it seems the sizzling new iPad 3 really is… err… sizzling.

Consumer reports is now saying that during some intense gaming action which, of course will cause battery & processor activity, the temperature of the back of the new iPad 3 can reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit.  That temp is nothing to sneeze at.  Tests have shown that temps of 120 can cause damage to bare skin.

According to Apple, if the device gets too hot, it should give you a warning on the screen.  I haven't yet had a chance to purchase an iPad 3, although I will in the near future.

So my question to all of you tech loving readers is this.  If you own the new iPad 3, are you noticing incredible amounts of heat?  I want comments both positive & negative.  Now get to it!

Oh and if you'd like the full scoop from Consumer Reports, read it here.

DentalEZ® Group Marks Oral Cancer Awareness Month with Several Sponsorships

Company Partners with the Oral Cancer Foundation and University of Pennsylvania to Bring Awareness of a Potentially Deadly Disease

Malvern, PA (March 19, 2012) – DentalEZ® Group, a supplier of innovative products and services for dental health professionals worldwide, is currently uniting in separate efforts with both the Oral Cancer Foundation and University of Pennsylvania to increase oral cancer disease awareness for both dental professionals and the general public throughout the month of April and beyond.

Partnering with members of the Illinois dental community and the Oral Cancer Foundation, DentalEZ will sponsor the First Annual Northern Illinois Oral Cancer Awareness Walk on Sunday, June 10, 2012.  Furthermore, DentalEZ is working in conjunction with the foundation to reach its goal of having 5,000 dental practices commit to conducting free oral cancer exams throughout the month of April.

The Oral Cancer Awareness Walk will begin at 8 a.m. at the idyllic 5K double loop path around Lake Arlington, 2201 N. Windsor Drive, Arlington Heights, IL.  Registration is $25 per person, and may be done at the time of the event or online at  There will also be a silent auction, raffle, and free screenings by dental professionals.  All proceeds will be donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation.

DentalEZ also contributed literature, Identafi posters, and disposable mirror heads to several dental practices participating in free oral cancer exams throughout the month of April.  One of the practices is Dental Oncology Professionals of North Texas.  “We will be educating patients on the oral cancer screening device and about the importance of getting a yearly oral cancer screening, either through us, or their general dentist,” remarked Norberto Diaz, Public Relationship Manager of Dental Oncology Professionals of North Texas.  “We are extremely grateful for dental professionals such as DentalEZ who enhance our efforts with informative literature and the tools we need to make our event a success.”

DentalEZ will also co-sponsor the 4th Annual Philadelphia Oral Cancer Awareness Walk & 5K.   Organized by the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, the event will take place on Sunday, April 29th 2012 in the West Philadelphia area.  Free oral health screenings will be available to the public as well as food and refreshments.  Furthermore, there will be guest speakers present, as well as prizes during the event.  Up to 500 participants are expected to attend.

DentalEZ qualified as a Bronze Level Sponsor by contributing a $1000 monetary donation to the event.  For information about registration or sponsorship opportunities for the Philadelphia Oral Cancer Awareness Walk & 5K, visit

Several dental dealers have also partnered with DentalEZ in the oral cancer awareness effort by agreeing to insert an appeal to their dental customers into more than 30,000 outgoing packages during March.

Oral cancer is not a rare disease.  This year, approximately 37,000 people in the United States will receive this diagnosis, and it will kill one person every hour of every day.  But oral cancer can be caught early.  Early detection can be achieved through a simple, painless screening done as part of a routine visit to the dentist.  With early detection, survival rates are high and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest.

“DentalEZ is a major supporter of early oral cancer screening in order to detect a disease that can be highly treatable if caught in time,” remarked Rick Gross, Senior Product Manager for StarDental®.  “Unfortunately, many cases of oral cancer cannot be detected early enough with the naked eye, so we are making great efforts to spread the message of how important it is for all dental professionals to screen all patients regularly with an oral cancer screening device.”

The company’s StarDentaldivision offers the Identafi®, an oral cancer screening device used for the detection of oral pathologies, including biochemical and morphological changes in the cells of the mouth, throat, tongue, and tonsils that may lead to oral cancer.  The small, cordless, handheld Identafi uses an innovative 3-wavelength optical illumination and visualization system that allows dental professionals to identify oral mucosal abnormalities not visible to the naked eye.

For more information about the Identafi oral cancer screening device or how your dental practice can participate in providing free oral cancer exams throughout the month of April, please call 866-DTE-INFO or visit

Stats from the UK shows that Oral Cancer Rates are Rising There as Well

Oral cancer rates are on the rise here in the US.  Now stats show that across the pond, the rates are rising as well.

This story from the BBC gives all the current details.

Since we know this is happening, i thought I'd take a moment here to give some rather frightening stats on the disease.  It is imperative that patients should have oral cancer exams done by the dentist & that dentists should be doing everything we can to spot & help catch this terrible disease in its earliest stages.  Take a look at a few amazing statistics:

  • Oral cancer kills almost three times as many people as cervical cancer every year.
  • Oral cancer is responsible for more deaths tan from other cancers we hear about more routinely such as lung and skin cancer.
  • This year around 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer.
  • One person every hour of every day will die from the disease.
  • The fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population is the 25-50 age range who have had more than 3 sexual partners.
  • Cancers are caused primarily by the human papilloma virus strains 16 & 18.
  • If oral cancer is detected early in stages 1 or 2, the survival rate can be as high as 80-90%.
  • Later detection in stages 3 or 4 causes survival rates to drop to 20-30%.

So it's imperative that both patients and professionals are doing everything we can to find this disease at its very earliest detectable stages.  There are currently (at least the I am aware of) 4 companies that have products designed to help the screening process.  They are:

It's Like Area 51 only for Tracking Terrorism

Utah Data Center.jpg
In the Utah desert, your tax dollars are building an incredible secret complex.  The National Security Agency (NSA) is building this behemoth to try and analyze all kinds of communications and decipher which ones are threats to US security.
It will also be the central code breaking outfit.  Five times larger than the US Capital, this thing is under construction right now.
I was fascinated by the article on that I just finished.  It's a great piece of writing via Wired Magazine.  Head on over and give it a read.
