Impressions from the Yankee Dental Congress
I returned home late last night from New England where I was honored to be asked to give 5 lectures at the Yankee Dental Congress. The weather didn't cooperate much this year with the opening day, Thursday, being dealt a 10 inch snowfall overnight. That meant schools were cancelled and many attendees were forced to stay home due to the school closings & driving conditions. As proof of that, I arrived at the convention center on Thursday morning in a snow plow as I was unable to find a cab... but that's another whole post.
The weather definitely affected attendance on Thursday, especially in the morning, but the afternoon showed increased attendance. Friday was crazy with vendors reporting brisk sales and lots of booth traffic. Saturday was lighter which is usually expected on the last day of a meeting, especially one where a city was still digging out of the snow.
One of the highlights of the show was the Technology Playground organized and manned by my buddy Dr. Paul Feuerstein. Paul spent a good deal of time in the playground showing & talking about the latest tech with vendors there showing their wares. It's definitely an idea I can see being picked up by other major meetings.

Working & the NFL Playoffs - Can They Coexist?
Today I'll be spending the day reviewing and finalizing my 5 (that's right 5) lectures that I'll be giving at the Yankee Dental Congress this week. Of course the problem with that is that the NFL Playofs are today too. What's a sports fan to do?
Well, fortunately for me, I have a bit of tech to help me along.
While I'll be working away on my MacBook Pro, I'll also be using an extra 19" monitor that allows me to have 2 screens. Studies have shown that people who use 2 screens are a minimum of 20% more efficient. I'll gladly attest to that. When I'm on the road and forced to use just the screen on my Mac, it feels like I'm typing with only one hand or something.
Add to that the fact that I have a Windows machine in my home office that is also set up with 2 monitors. One of them is an Exorvision 17" with a cable TV connection. That allows me to have the games up (and muted unfortunately), but i can, with the push of a remote, switch it back to computer if need be to do some research. Oh, and since that monitor will have a browser open, I'll also have the ESPN live game feed open so if the TV is off, game progress can still be followed. Even with the monitor in TV mode, the other monitor will have Tweetdeck up to keep me updated of the info coming in from my Twitter buddies and Facebook friends.
It won't be like sitting on a comfy couch and watching the game in surround sound, but it's far better than the alternative!

Sprint & T-Mobile iPhones on the Horizon?
If you're a Sprint or T-Mobile customer, the recent announcement of the iPhone on Verizon could be good news for you.
It seems that Apple has shown that (in Europe, anyway) once their exclusive agreement expires with a carrier, they are quick to make the iPhone available on other networks. So, since the exclusive agreement with AT&T has expired and Verizon is getting the iPhone, it follows that other US carriers may soon be part of the iPhone family.
Add to that the fact that Verizon and Sprint both use CDMA technology as their wireless standard and it becomes a fairly easy thing to switch networks.
Sprint actually has an announcement planned for February 7th, so that may well be what it is about... but that is speculation at this time.

HP May unveil WebOS Tablet on February 9th
When the Consumer Electronics Show ended without an announcement from HP on its rumored tablet, some people didn't know what to think. This past CES really seemed to be a tablet centered event and lots of companies were showing off their new devices.
When HP purchased Palm last year, rumors swirled regarding the reason for the acquisition. HP had already been making hand held devices and moved on from them. What would they want with a company that was making smartphones? Then the speculation began that it wasn't about the phones, it was about the OS that ran the phones. WebOS could hold a lot of promise for a lot of different portable devices.
The next round of rumors related to a new tablet device that HP would be bringing to market. It would run, of course, WebOS. So when the CES wrapped up with no HP announcement, there was confusion.
Now comes word that on February 9th, HP will have an event centered on the WebOS software. My money is on them announcing their tablet at that time. I owned a Palm Pre WebOS smartphone for a while. The OS seems robust and truly allows for multitasking. This might be just the thing to shake up the market. However, it's got to be more stable and faster than what I experienced in the phone. Here's hoping they get it right.

Verizon to Sell iPad with a Connection to its Network
Fresh on the heels of the announcement that Verizon will soon have the iPhone, comes news that it will soon have the iPad as well.
For a while now, Verizon has been promoting buying the WiFi only iPad and then connecting it via wireless WiFi broadband hotspot (which is exactly what I'm doing on the Sprint network). However, now comes the news that Verizon will actually be able to sell an iPad with an onboard chip that will allow the device to connect directly to Verizon's high speed network, just like the current model available only on AT&T. It's looking more and more like there will be no difference at all between the devices available from the 2 competing companies.
While this news is confirmed by Verizon's CFO in an article appearing from Bloomberg, there is no indication as to exactly when this will be available.

Voctorinox Swiss Army Jump Drive
If you spend as much time on the road as I do, you're always looking for a way to streamline the amount of things you have to carry and that includes backup medium.
The folks at Victorinox are famous for making Swiss Army knives. They've even, in the past, made them with jump drives built in. The drawback to that design comes if you are traveling with it. The TSA frowns on knives in your carryon nowadays.
As a solution to that problem, Victorinox is now making a form factor similar to their knives, but all it contains is USB jump drives. They come in several sizes including a 128GB model that features 2 64GB drives.
They were shown at the recently held Consumer Electronics Show and should be available in the not too distant future.

ALIGN TECHNOLOGY AND CADENT ANNOUNCE JOINT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT
I've been using the Cadent iTero digital impression system for a year now and have been thrilled with the performance of the device. Now, Cadent is expanding its reach into digital impressions for using with Invisalign. Read on for all the details.
Companies to Develop 3D Scanner-based Applications for Invisalign® Treatment
SAN JOSE, Calif. and CARLSTADT, N.J., January 10, 2011 -- Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN) and Cadent, Inc., today announced an agreement to jointly develop software applications that will run on Cadent iTeroTM and iOCTM scanners for use in Invisalign treatment. The new applications will optimize case assessment and planning for Invisalign treatment, and bring valuable digital tools chair-side for Invisalign providers who use Cadent scanners.
“The joint development agreement with Cadent is in line with our long-term strategic initiatives of improving the Invisalign customer experience through innovation,” said Thomas M. Prescott, Align president and CEO. “Our partnership with Cadent allows us to leverage our own and other innovative technology to bring digital diagnosis and treatment tools conveniently chair-side in customers’ practices.”
“Cadent’s powder-free scanning technology is fundamental for meeting the precision demanded by Align’s standards,” said Timothy Mack, Cadent president and CEO. “We are honored to develop new Invisalign applications which leverage our combined technologies and create value for our mutual customers and their patients. Integration with Invisalign has been one of the most widely requested enhancements by both general practitioners who use the iTero system and orthodontists who are using the iOC system.”
Over the past few years, Align has worked with several manufacturers of intra-oral scanning (IOS) systems to evaluate interoperability of these systems for future use with Invisalign treatment. Rigorous standards for scan quality and accuracy have been defined by Align to ensure a specific scanning technology can successfully replace the physical impressions currently used in an Invisalign case submission. As part of that program, Align is currently in final beta tests with Cadent to validate their systems for use with Invisalign and expects to announce interoperability in the second quarter of 2011.
Under the terms of the agreement, Align will fund several million dollars for Cadent software development over the next few quarters in order to accelerate the availability of these chair-side applications. Align will own all rights to the developed applications and technology. Additional information regarding these new Invisalign applications will be provided closer to commercial launch.
About Align Technology, Inc.

Invisalign corrects malocclusion using a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable appliances that gently move teeth to a desired final position. Because it does not rely on the use of metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign significantly reduces the aesthetic and other limitations associated with braces. Invisalign is appropriate for treating adults and teens. Align Technology was founded in March 1997 and received FDA clearance to market Invisalign in 1998. Today, the Invisalign product family includes Invisalign Full, Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Assist, Invisalign Express, and Vivera Retainers. For additional information, please visit www.aligntech.com

iCade is Coming... Grab your iPads Now!!!

Didn't think you needed an iPad? Think again!
When the iPad was announced, we all crammed into a conference room to watch live and drool over every shiny corner and reflecty icon. After the glow of the initial announcement wore off, many of us came to the conclusion that the iPad was actually pretty useless. "It's a giant iPhone!" some said. Others exclaimed, "WTF, no Flash!?". Still, we knew that most Apple fanbots (us included) would have to have one anyway.
Knowing that many of our loyal geeky customers would eventually get their retractable claws on an iPad at some point, we knew we needed to take it to the next level. What cool things could we do with the iPad that you, our lovely geek customers, would squee over? A few brainstorming sessions later, the idea of a MAME cabinet came up and we knew we'd struck gold. How cool would it be to slide your iPad into a desktop-sized arcade cabinet and rock it old school with some Pac-Man or Space Invaders?
Enter the iCADE iPad Arcade Cabinet! To use the iCade, gently slide the iPad into the cradle. The iCADE uses Bluetooth to connect to the iPad so there's nothing else you need to do. You're ready to "insert coin" and game on!
To bring the iCADE to life, ThinkGeek has partnered with ION. Atari, the first name in classic arcade games, also signed up to bring a huge suite of classic arcade titles including Asteroids® to market with iCADE support built right in. When released, a friendly API will be made available to developers to add iCADE support to almost any game.
Product Specifications
- Beautifully retro-styled tabletop arcade cabinet for your otherwise useless iPad
- iPad connects to the iCADE controls via Bluetooth
- Atari providing classic games ready to go with the iCADE, including Asteroids and other top games.
- API to be released allowing any iOS developer to create iCADE-compatible games.

Do You Know what Your Apps Know?
As an Android user, I love what my Samsung Epic provides me. Let's face it, one of the best things a smartphone does nowadays is run apps.
You can find an app for just about everything... and then some. Most of us have become pretty dependent on at least a few apps whether they be for organizing our lives or playing our tunes.
Because of that dependence, and because we tend not to read the fine print, most of us have non idea what we agree to when we install our apps. In fact I think it's fair to say that you'd be surprised. However, if you don't check you'll never know.
Read the article referenced below from the Wall Street Journal and then check your apps!

Toshiba Readying New Tablet for First Half of 2011

- Android "Gingerbread" Operating System
- Removable battery - while this is nice, if the device has a battery life similar to the iPad (I'm not sure if it does) this seems nice but maybe overkill
- Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor
- 10.1 Inch 1280 x 800 display
- An SD card slot as well as a HDMI port for connecting to other video devices
- 2 cameras - a rear facing camera that will have a 5 megapixel capacity and a forward facing camera with a 2 megapixel capacity
- Wifi but no connection to any wireless data networks from wireless carriers like Sprint, AT&T, etc
As more and more of these devices hit the market they'll begin to push into iPad sales. This is going to be a really interesting year for tablets. No doubt about that .
