26 USOSM Surgeon Partners to Participate Across Seven States

In honor of Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, 26 U.S. Oral Surgery Management surgeon partners in seven states will offer free oral cancer screenings during the week of April 14. The screenings are part of a joint partnership with the Head & Neck Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of oral, head and neck cancer.

April is recognized as Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, a time to increase awareness of the condition, risk factors, statistics, and screenings. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that in 2024 alone, 58,450 new cases of oral cancer were diagnosed, with 12,230 deaths attributed to it.

“The good news is that oral cancer has a survival rate of 80 to 90% when diagnosed early, according to the Head & Neck Cancer Foundation. That’s why events like this are so important,” said Vincent J. Perciaccante, DDS, FACS, USOSM chief clinical officer and a practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon with South Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. “Many oral cancer cases go undetected until they are categorized as late-stage cancers. If a pathology like oral cancer is present, it’s better to diagnose it as soon as possible. Early diagnosis can mean better treatment options and outcomes.”

The Head & Neck Cancer Foundation reports that the oral cancer diagnosis median age is 66, but the number of early-onset cases is rising. In particular, there are more patients being diagnosed under 50 who do not have traditional risk factors, like smoking or alcohol use. This shift is largely attributed to the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is now considered the number one cause.

“We recommend annual pathology screenings by a qualified health care professional, particularly since the number of early-onset cases is rising,” noted Dr. Perciaccante. “We also encourage you to do monthly self-exams to look for any changes – such as lumps, sores, or discolorations – which could be early signs of a pathology.”

Some additional, common symptoms of oral cancer identified by the CDC include sores or pain in the mouth or throat that will not go away; swelling or unusual bleeding; or difficulty performing daily functions like breathing, speaking, chewing, or swallowing food.

“If you’re experiencing any symptoms, have risk factors, or haven’t had a pathology screening yet this year, we urge you to take part in a free screening event in your area,” added Dr. Perciaccante. “If there isn’t one in your area, ask your insurance if they cover annual screenings such as this. Many cover it at no cost to the patient.”

Some risk factors to consider include smoking and alcohol use, genetic predisposition, poor nutrition, improperly fitted dental implants, mouth/face injuries, inadequate oral hygiene, and certain medical conditions/diseases.

Dental Duets - An Interview by Michael Ventriello

 

A really short post today because the real info comes from the link below, but I want to provide a little backstory to this.  I've been friends with Micheal Ventriello for at least 20 years.  He's an amazing public relations mind.  When I met him he was working for an ad agency that specialized in a focus on dentistry.

We'd see each other at industry meetings and exchange emails in between those events.  We eventually graduated up to meeting for breakfast at those meetings and then we eventually began collaborating together on projects.  In fact, recently Mike started a PR collaboration with another great friend, Mark Ross.  They launched Personify Group in the fall of 2024 and I have joined as the Dental Technology Advisor to help with their services and deliverables.

AdDent BioScreen - the Benefits of Oral Cancer Screening

 

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and along those lines, I'd like to highlight a product to help doctors better screen for oral cancer.  That product is an oral cancer screening device called BioScreen and it is manufactured and sold by one of my favorite 'better mousetrap' companies, AdDent.  Dentistry is a wonderful profession.  I love that it lets me solve problems as well as allowing me to know I'm helping people.  Dentistry can be life changing for many people, however there are also ways that it can be life saving.  One of those potentially life saving things is to be performing routine oral cancer screenings for patients on a regular basis.

Oral cancer is, as are most cancers, an insidious disease that often goes unnoticed in its early stages.  Unfortunately any cancer becomes much more difficult to remove and/or cure as it progresses.  The key to beating cancer, for both the doctor and the patient, is early detection.

Here are some Key Statistics about oral cancer:

• Around 60,000 new cases are diagnosed annually in the United States
• It accounts for about 13,000 deaths each year
• The 5 year survival rate is 68%
• 95% of cases occur in people over 40 with an average age of diagnosis around 60 years of age
• It used to be historically more prominent in males, at one time having a 6:1 male to female ratio.  However, currently it has shifted to 2:1 male/female ratio
• While the common belief is that alcohol and tobacco use were the prime risk factors, currently it is also linked with HPV 16 infections (which cause cancer in the tonsils and the base of the tongue).  That is the same virus that causes cervical cancer in women
• There has been a 49% increase in cases in the last 10 years

Those are sobering statistics and they are why oral cancer screening is critical for saving lives.

One of the best ways to prevent oral cancers is to inoculate young people with the HPV vaccine (Gardasil).  Originally this was used for prevention of cervical cancer in women, but as more has become known about HPV, the vaccine has also been given to young men as the first step in helping to prevent oral cancers.  The benefits for helping to prevent oral cancer is shared by both genders.  Gardasil 9 protects against nine types of HPV: 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58.  Oral cancers have been linked to HPV 16.

The other critical piece of helping to prevent the impact of this disease is to screen patients routinely as part of a regular dental examination.  Finding oral cancer at its earliest stages makes it much easier to treat and the screenings are especially easy to do if the doctor and hygienist use a light assisted screening.  Screening lights utilize a special wavelength of light that creates biofluorescence to aid detection.  The AdDent Bioscreen is a great way to provide these screenings.

I explain to patients that the light is *not* a diagnostic device.  It doesn't tell me that I see cancer.  It is a *screening* device.  Injured tissues look different when exposed to the light.  Healthy tissues look like the skin of a green apple while any injured or abnormal tissues appear dark or black.  Small areas are much easier to see with a screening light.

The BioScreen uses 5 LEDs that allow the screening to be done, even in a brightly lit area.  An eyepiece and viewing filters increases the contrast between healthy and abnormal tissue.  The device runs on a rechargeable battery that will last for 500 charging cycles.  It even has an auto shut off feature if the device is accidentally left on.  It also has a low battery indicator that tells the user to charge it before the battery is fully spent.

Our patients often mention how much they appreciate the fact that we perform oral cancer screenings and I personally think they are one of the best things we can do.  As specialists of the mouth, head, and neck, dental professionals are uniquely positioned to provide these screenings.  By doing so, a doctor might just save a life... and that is a powerful thing to think about.

Heartland Dental, Concorde Career Colleges break ground on co-branded campus

Heartland Dental and Concorde Career Colleges have broken ground on their first co-branded dental training campus in Fort Myers, Fla.

Concorde Career Colleges launched a partnership with the DSO to open campuses for hygienists and dental assistants in August. As part of the deal, Heartland Dental is funding the construction and providing scholarships to students. 

The Fort Myers campus will train up to 190 hygienists and dental assistants each year.
Concorde Career Colleges announced the groundbreaking in an April 8 LinkedIn post. The campus is expected to open later this year.

The Technology Evangelist Podcast is coming Soon!

 

In my first post here of 2025, I mentioned that I was thinking about starting a podcast.  Well, since that post I've been hard at work.  There's a lot that goes into putting a podcast together.  A lot of the work is on the 'backend' post-production.  For me, talking is easy... sometimes too easy... but my point is that, for me, content is easy to create.  The time consuming and sometimes difficult part is creating the content.  It's the backend part that will be more difficult.

That's why I'm grateful that I'm partnering with Medidenta Digital on this.  They have the experts and the expertise to put this all together into a digestible form for the audience.

We've just about got the whole process ready to go.  In the not too distant future I'm going to start interviewing guests and then getting that content out to all of you.  I know the graphic for this post says "Register here to Watch or Listen for free", but our content isn't live yet, so there's no link to follow.

CareQuest Institute Reacts to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and EPA Secretary Lee Zeldin’s Statements on Fluoride

So, once again a post on the fluoride controversy.  Sometimes I plan a theme for a few posts, but this week that wasn't the intention.  It's a simple matter of the news being the news and since this is an issue that really impacts the profession, I reordered the queue of posts to make sure these were going to be seen.  Unfortunately, I don't know how much longer this issue will carry mainstream news interest, but I hope it doesn't fade quietly away.  I worry about lower income folks not seeing the benefit of fluoride.  However, as I've stated previously, I believe in democracy and the concept of majority rule.
 

    April 8, 2025 (Boston, MA) – CareQuest Institute for Oral Health®, a leading national nonprofit focused on creating a more accessible, equitable, and integrated oral health system today issued a statement regarding U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s plans to direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to stop recommending fluoridation in communities nationwide and EPA Secretary Lee Zeldin’s announcement that the EPA, which oversees water quality, will also “take action”.

Efforts to remove it from public water systems–like those recently proposed by Health Secretary Robert F.  “These actions come at a time when 70 million Americans lack dental insurance, 23 million face potential cuts to Medicaid dental coverage, and recent HHS layoffs have scaled back vital oral health programs at the federal level. As a result, our nation is at risk of losing critical layers of protection for basic oral health access. Without these programs and infrastructure, the US could see a sharp rise in not just dental disease, but also preventable conditions linked to poor oral health — including diabetes, hypertension, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. As this administration works to make America healthier, we need solutions on oral health that continue to make improvements and address challenges posed by recent changes.” 

RFK Jr. says he plans to tell CDC to stop recommending fluoride in drinking water

 

It's sometimes strange how the news cycle works.  This is the second post this week about fluoride and adding it to municipal water systems.  This post is short, because all of the real information is in the lnked story at the bottom, but it for sure is something you need to be aware of.  

My post this past Monday was on the ongoing fluoride controversy and my feelings on that.  However today's post is about a news item.  Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr had a press conference on Monday.  He was in Salt Lake City celebrating the recent law passed in Utah that bans fluoridation in any municipal system in the state.

While there, he announced that he plans to tell the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to stop recommending fluoridation in communities nationwide.  It was also announced Monday that the EPA is reviewing the potential health risks of fluoride in drinking water.

The Ongoing Fluoride Controversy

 

I feel compelled to make a statement on municipal water fluoridation.  In the past couple of weeks, the news has had stories about the state of Utah banning water fluoridation and that was followed by a unanimous vote by the Lakeland, Florida City Council that has done the same thing.

I've tried to make this post as neutral as possible.  If anything here sounds argumentative, please understand that isn't what I'm trying to do.  I don't think arguing over something is the way to solve problems.  I'd much rather have a rational discussion and sometimes people need to respectfully agree to disagree.  I'm not trying to stand on a soapbox and shout my opinion.  I'm trying to be as factual about this and as middle of the road as I can.  If this post upsets anyone, I apologize.  That isn't my intent.  

Here's my take.  This is America, a country where we normally expect majority rule.  If a majority is opposed to something, we don't do it.  It's pretty simple.  That's apparently what has happened in Utah and Lakeland, Florida.  Personally I'm fine with that.  I have access to all the fluoride toothpaste and varnish that I need to keep my teeth healthy.

In fact, this is one of the few public health subjects that doesn't directly affect others.  Let me explain.  Opposition to vaccines has caused outbreaks of disease.  That can affect others.  No vaccine that I'm aware of is 100% effective.  There are rare instances of people contracting a disease they were vaccinated against.  However, if no one else has the disease, anyone's chance of catching it is pretty rare.  When lots of people are running around unvaccinated and shedding pathogens like my cat sheds fur, that's a problem... and it can affect others.

Fluoride isn't like that.  It really only affects one person... and that's the person who isn't receiving fluoridation.  It's especially true for children.  As children consume fluoridated water, it is passed into the permanent teeth developing in the jaws.  That uptake of fluoride means that the enamel develops stronger and when those teeth finally erupt into the mouth, the fluoride that has been deposited into their developing enamel makes that enamel less prone to decay.

What I want the lay public to understand is this: every decision has consequences.  There is an upside and a downside to everything.  By removing fluoride from drinking water, you are more or less trading a very unlikely outcome for a bad one.  Teeth that haven't developed with fluoride 'built into them' are much more prone to dental decay.  No fluoride in the enamel pretty much guarantees that your children are going to suffer more decay... not just in their primary (baby) teeth, but in their permanent teeth and that means it's a lifelong problem.  If you are comfortable with that decision (and the potential risk), then go ahead and remove fluoride nationwide.  However, just remember what you are asking for.  Your kids are going to grow into adults and throughout their life, they are going to have to deal with this decision.  Every parent I know wants their children to have a life that is better than their parents had.  This is going in exactly the opposite direction.  I know that some people have concerns, but I feel the science for safety is pretty convincing.

I always want people to know dentistry wanting fluoridation like is not some kind of a conspiracy.  In reality, no fluoride in the drinking water is going to make dentistry a lot busier and dentists will financially benefit from it.  The reason we, as a profession, are so pro fluoride is that we don't enjoy seeing people suffer with problems.  Dentists are busy enough.  We don't *need* to be busier.  There are enough dental problems right now to keep us busy.  Community water fluoridation has been touted as the most important public health measure in history and I don't know that I can argue against that.

So as longs as everyone understands the repercussions of this decision, I'm good either way.  What I don't want is a situation I heard in an old joke someone once told me about a cowboy.  The cowboy goes into the saloon and drinks an entire bottle of whiskey.  On his way home he takes off all his clothes and jumps on a cactus.  The next day, as the town doctor is pulling hundreds of thorns out of him he asks the cowboy, "What were you thinking?"  The cowboy replies, "Well it seemed like a great idea at the time."

What I want is for people to make an informed decision. I hope I've presented some good information here.

Compex HD™ an Amazing Heated Composite Dispenser

 

As regular readers know, I'm a huge fan of heated composite.  The benefits are numerous as far as clinical results and long term outcomes.  Over 60 studies have shown the benefits of heating composite prior to placement.  However, those benefits are a bonus for me compared to how easy warm composite is to place.  I love placing warm composite!  There really isn't a single change to your restorative protocol that can have a bigger impact on the clinical results.  Normally to achieve great results, the effort is worth it, but effort is required.  This is one of those amazing things that can give you better results and actually make your efforts easier.

Along those lines, I'm also a huge fan of AdDent.  The company makes several impactful, high-quality products *and* they are one of the leading companies when it comes to products that can heat your composite to achieve great results.  I recently published a post about their Calset composite warming system... and it works great.  Today's post is about another one of their 'better mousetraps' to help with that.

The Compex HD is a composite dispensing gun that heats composite and allows you deliver it directly into the prep.  There is a small heating element in the barrel of the Compex HD that warms the compule before delivery and then allows you to smoothly and easily dispense it with the pull of the trigger.  The barrel is incredibly well insulated so there is not concern about the barrel making contact with soft tissues.

It warms the material to 155°F (68°C) in 40 seconds.  My normal protocol is finish the preparation and then we turn the Compex HD on.   While we're isolating the field, the composite is warming.  By the time we've isolated and have the prep ready for delivery, the device is ready to go.  At that point the material is delivered in the same manner as always.  That means no real change to your clinical protocol other than to push the 'on' button on the device.  No matter what technique you use or material you choose, the Compex HD can be integrated easily.

The device is cordless and the rechargeable battery can heat 100 compules before needing to be charged.  It's incredibly light weight and can be moved from operatory to operatory easily.  Of course, I feel that once you've used it, you'll find you need one in every restorative operatory in your office.  I should also state that the device fits well in the doctor's hand.  Whether you're like me and have fairly large fans or you're a female doctor with smaller hands, the Compex HD is easy to hold and use.

The device also has a small tab on the barrel that ejects the compule when pushed so changing and reloading is fast and efficient.  Once the barrel is fully warmed, the next compule heats fast so there is no concern about using Compex HD in quadrant cases where multiple compules would be used.  Of course pairing the device with AdDent's Calset device means that your composites are always warm and placement is even easier.

Compex HD is a winner and I feel if you try it, you'll feel the same way.  The benefits are amazing.

Chord Specialty Dental Partners Announces Massive Data Breach

 

Despite today being April Fools Day, today's post is true.  Quite honestly I wish it wasn't.

As you regular readers know, I'm constantly screaming about data security from the mountaintop.  However, I don't normally identify offices affected by a breach by name.  This one is different.  This breach is newsworthy because of the number of patients affected.  DSOs are prime targets for data breaches as they have interconnected systems that allow criminals to get *more* data than they could grab from a single office.  This particular breach has the potential to affect 173,000 patients and because of that, I think it's important to know about.

I want to make clear that this post is not meant to embarrass or demean the DSO.  This post is to remind all of us that security is a hugely important topic.  Taking your eyes off target can result in your practice being affected by something like this.  Incidents like this are hard to stop by the efforts of a private practice's IT contractor.  To get the best protection possible, an office needs security professionals.  There are several companies out there that can help make you as secure as possible.  My current favorite is Black Talon Security.  Also, to help you to be able to restore your info without paying the ransom, having solid and verified backups is critical.  That's why I trust DDS Rescue to provide backup services to my practice.

I'd also like to commend Chord Specialty Dental Partners for following the letter of the law.  HIPAA requires specific reporting and it looks like they are doing all they can to meet those reporting requirements.  These incidents are stressful and difficult on everyone involved and it appears that Chord is doing everything they can.  Below is their breach announcement as required by HIPAA.

NOTIFICATION OF DATA SECURITY INCIDENT

March 14, 2025 – On or around September 11, 2024, CDHA Management, LLC and Spark DSO, LLC dba Chord Specialty Dental Partners (“Chord”) discovered suspicious activity related to an employee’s email account. Upon discovery, we took immediate action to secure the account and engaged a team of third-party specialists to assist with determining the full nature and scope of the incident. The investigation determined that an unauthorized individual had gained access to several accounts for a limited time between August 19, 2024, to September 25, 2024. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive review of the information potentially affected. The type of information varies by individual and may include name and one or more of the following: address, Social Security number, driver’s license, bank account information, payment card information, date of birth, medical information, and health insurance information.

At this time, Chord is not aware of any evidence to suggest that any information has been or will be fraudulently misused. However, we were unable to rule out the possibility that the information could have been accessed. Therefore, in an abundance of caution, we are notifying potentially impacted individuals of this incident.

In response to this incident, we immediately began an investigation and reviewed our policies and procedures related to data security. We are also providing potentially affected individuals access to credit monitoring and identity protection services as an added precaution. If you have questions about this incident or would like to enroll in the credit monitoring and identity protection services, please call 1-833-998-6327, Monday through Friday, between 8 AM and 8 PM ET, excluding holidays. You may also write to us at 1801 West End Ave., Suite 410, Nashville, TN 37203.

In general, we encourage potentially affected individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing credit reports/account statements and explanation of benefits forms for suspicious activity and to detect errors. Under U.S. law, individuals are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus, TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228.

Individuals have the right to place an initial or extended fraud alert on a credit file at no cost. If individuals are a victim of identity theft, they are entitled to an extended fraud alert lasting seven years. As an alternative to a fraud alert, they have the right to place a credit freeze on a credit report. The credit freeze is designed to prevent credit, loans, and services from being approved without consent. Pursuant to federal law, individuals cannot be charged to place or lift a credit freeze on your credit report.
