DentalEZ® Group Announces the Retirement of President Gordon W. Hagler

Malvern, PA (May 30, 2014) – DentalEZ® Group, a supplier of innovative products and services for dental health professionals worldwide, announced today that Gordon W. Hagler will retire from his position as President and COO on July 3, 2014 following almost a decade of service with the company.  

 

“We are extremely grateful for all of Gordon’s substantial contributions and leadership not only within our organization but to the dental industry as a whole,” remarked Jeffrey E. Perelman, CEO of DentalEZ Group. “Gordon has been an essential part of DentalEZ‘s success, and he can look back on an impressive career spanning over 47 years within the dental arena.  We wish Gordon the very best in his retirement; he will be greatly missed.” 

 

Hagler has had a distinguished career in the dental industry. Prior to joining DentalEZ in 2005, he was Vice President of Digital Imaging & Strategic Relations for PracticeWorks/Kodak Dental Systems, which acquired Trophy Dental in 2003. Hagler was the President of Trophy at the time of acquisition. 

 

Additionally, Hagler was an active member of the American Dental Trade Association (ADTA), and served on the Board of the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) as well as the Industrial Advisory Board of the Center for Research and Education in Technology Evaluation (CRETE). 

 

 

Remarked Hagler, “DentalEZ is an outstanding company and I am very proud of the job we, as a team, have done. I appreciate all the support I have received since my retirement announcement, and I have much confidence that Vickie (Waitsman) and, subsequently our new President, will continue to uphold DentalEZ as an industry leader and a company that I am proud to say that I was a part of.”

 

Following Hagler’s official retirement on July 3, 2014, Vickie Waitsman will step in as Interim President for DentalEZ Group until a permanent successor is found.Waitsman has been Vice President and General Counsel of DentalEZ Group for over 20 years. She is actively involved with oral health causes and currently serves on the boards of directors of Oral Health America, the Academy of Dentistry International Foundation, and Kids Smiles. 

 

She is a past Chairman of the Dental Trade Alliance and served on that board as well as the board of its predecessor, the Dental Manufacturer's Association, and the board of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation. In 2012, she was honored in Dental Products Report as one of the “Top Twenty Five Women in Dentistry” for her outstanding leadership in the dental community.

Sjögren’s Syndrome is a systemic chronic inflammatory disorder in which the immune system attacks and damages the body's moisture-producing glands. This causes dryness of the eyes and mouth and is associated with a number of oral and ocular complications.

BIOMET 3i announces the 11th winner of the Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery

National Well-Being Measure Finds Majority Struggling

Data confirm illness and negative work environment have significant impact on productivity

WASHINGTON, D.C. April 29, 2008 – Most Americans are struggling to achieve satisfactory health and well- being according to initial results of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index announced today. When asked to evaluate their lives based on a ladder scale, 47 percent of the 100,000 respondents polled in the 1,000 daily surveys conducted since January say they are struggling and an additional four percent say they are suffering. Factors contributing to these findings include negative workplace environments and difficulty making positive health decisions about modifiable health behaviors like diet, exercise, and stress.

“In general, we find that misfortunes tend to reinforce each other,” said Daniel Kahneman, Ph. D., Professor Emeritus at Princeton University, Woodrow Wilson School Senior Scholar, Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology and Nobel Laureate, Economics 2002. “In addition to physical pain, illness also increases feelings of stress, sadness and worries about money, and lowers energy. These consequences of illness are buffered or mitigated to some extent by the availability of health insurance, by higher income, by being married and by social contact with others. We are discovering that different aspects of life determine people’s judgments and their emotions, and we expect this survey to provide a much richer picture of the feelings of the American citizenry than has ever been available”

The Well-Being Index data also have tremendous implications for the American workplace and reveal that workers believe their work environment plays an important part in their overall well-being. Among the nearly 46,000 full-time workers surveyed to date:

  • Nearly two-thirds are obese or overweight (25 percent obese, 40 percent overweight)

  • Two-thirds report one or more chronic diseases or recurring conditions

  • More than 20 percent report they are not able to perform their usual activities on one or more days last

    month due to illness. These workers reported being out sick an average of six days in the last 30

  • Workers with one to three diseases and/or conditions report they cannot carry out their usual activities

    on 13.5 days each year. The impact of a negative work environment is an additional 6.6 days (48% higher) annually. Workers with four or more disease conditions report they cannot carry out their usual activities on 52.7 days each year. For these workers, the presence of a negative work environment increases that total to 68.9 days (a 31% increase)

“It’s pretty clear from the data provided through the Well-Being Index that Americans are indeed stuck in a cycle of chronic disease. We see that the majority of America is currently struggling or suffering
and that they often make poor lifestyle choices. Many are stressed, worried and overweight, all factors which lead to illness and, ultimately, lifelong health conditions,” said Healthways President and CEO Ben Leedle. “The information from the Well-Being Index will enable community leaders, policy makers and employers to make decisions that positively affect the health and well-being of millions of people.”

Based on the World Health Organization’s definition of health, the initial findings of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index were unveiled at a press conference at Gallup’s Washington, D.C. office. Speaking before an invited group of leaders from health, business and government, Gallup Chairman and CEO Jim Clifton described how the Well-Being Index will help countries, states and communities benchmark their health and well-being status.

“We have committed to conducting the Gallup World Poll for the next 100 years. We consider the Gallup- Healthways Well-Being Index to be of equal importance. In this new Index, the health domain reports physical and mental health, the well-being domain reports the presence of suffering or thriving, misery or inspiration, feeling controlled or feeling independent. This is a crucial metric because all good things happen in the presence of high well-being,” said Gallup Chairman and CEO Jim Clifton. “Our mission is to create new official statistics for leaders and the public that report the daily state of American health and well-being and to develop solutions to change and improve it.”

"The power of the approach used in the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index is in its size and scope," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Surveys and studies that get information from large numbers of people have the potential to provide much information that can be used to shape and deliver programs that improve health. Having a daily snapshot of how Americans view their own health and well-being can also provide insights that can help guide public health policies."

New Recyclable Plastic Discovered by Accident

I was reading the BBC news and came across his fascinating story. Anytime composites are improved, more advancements can be expected. Since dentistry is so dependent on composites, we may see some benefit out of this.

I also love the fact that this is all because of an accident. Many people don't realize it, but accidents have played a huge role in scientific discoveries throughout history.

Researchers have developed a collection of new plastics that are recyclable and adaptable - and the discovery began with a laboratory mistake.

They include strong, stiff plastics and flexible gels that can mend themselves if torn.

The findings, reported in the journal Science, could lead to cheaper and greener cars, planes and electronics.

It is the first time that durable "thermoset" plastic has been produced in a recyclable form.

Dr Jeanette Garcia, from IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, stumbled upon the first new class of thermosets in many years when she accidentally left one of three components out of a reaction.

"I had this chunk of plastic, and I had to figure out what it was," Dr Garcia told the BBC. "I had to smash my round-bottomed flask with a hammer."

That chunk of plastic, produced from unexpectedly simple ingredients, proved to be tremendously hard and stable. Crucially, it could be digested in acid, reverting to its original components.

This digestion reaction allows the chemical building blocks, or monomers, to be reused.

All previous "thermosets", like the Bakelite found in old telephones and radios, were not recyclable "It was definitely fortuitous," Dr Garcia said. "The first thing I did, of course, was to hit the literature, to try and see if it'd been done before. I just assumed that it had been - it's such a simple reaction."

But her search turned up nothing. This was new.

Once she understood what she had created, Dr Garcia set about repeating her finding. "We wasted a lot of flasks," she said.

Because they are strong and light-weight, thermosets are used throughout modern cars and aircraft, often mixed with carbon nanotubes to form composites. Some 50% of the new Airbus A350 jet, for example, will be made from composites.

Yet until now, none of this thermoset plastic could be recycled.

"The potential impact here is phenomenal," said Dr Charl Faul, a materials chemist at the University of Bristol. He says the study offers a "very simple, elegant answer to a very old problem".

The new plastics could reduce waste from aircraft materials Dr James Hedrick, who was in charge of the research at IBM, is excited by the possiblities. When a large or expensive component is damaged or reaches the end of its useful life, he explained, it could be repaired or recycled instead of thrown away.

"The ability to rework saves a tremendous amount of money and mitigates waste."

Beyond replacing thermoset-based composites in current technology, Dr Hedrick sees the potential for many more innovative applications. "We're at the discovery phase," he said. "Every time you discover a new polymer-forming reaction it leads to all sorts of new materials."

As well as very hard and durable plastics, the researchers adapted their procedure to a different monomer and produced flexible, self-healing gels. These could be useful in anything from cosmetics, to paint, to the design of drug capsules, because of their particular solubility properties.

"Applications are running like water," Dr Hedrick said. "We don't even know where to go with this yet."

GoPlug Creates Bags that Carry Power… as Well as Your Gear

I was rummaging around on Kickstarter recently when I stumbled across this really cool idea.  I mean especially cool because we're living in such a connected and power consuming world anymore.  Need I say more?
 
A few years ago I purchased a nice laptop bag made by the folks at APC.  They are a company that makes all kinds of batter backup and surge protection systems.  They were not known for their bags, but what they had developed was a bag that had a power brick in it.  This power brick had a connection for your laptop as well as a couple of USB slots. What it allowed you to do was to connect all of your gadgets to the power brick inside  the bag and then charge them all by simply plugging in the power brick to any AC outlet.  It was handy but really only designed to allow you to charge multiple gadgets while you were on the go.
 
However, what I see in the GoPlug system is that idea on steroids… and more!
 
The idea is beautiful in its simplicity.  Different types of bags with a strong rechargeable battery system built-in that allows you to recharge or power your devcies.  Basically charge the battery in your GoPlug bag and you've got spare power wherever you go.

A Potentially Game Changing Solar Cell

Over the past 20 years or so, we've seen some pretty remarkable advancements in photovoltaic (solar cell) technology.  Heck, I even own a solar powered charger for my iPhone.
 
When you think about renewable resources for energy, solar has them all beat.  Of course in the strict definition, solar power isn't truly a renewable resource.  However, it's pretty abundant and no one seems too worried about the potential for the sun going away any time soon.
 
However, despite its universal abundance, solar power is not without problems & limitations.
 
The 2 biggest problems are cost and efficiency.  Let's face it, if charging your cell phone with solar power will take twice as long while the charging device costs twice as much, most consumers will opt for the "old school" way of things.
 
Advances over the years have brought costs for solar cells down… way down.  This means that most of those impulse item calculators you see as you are checking out at a store are powered by solar cells instead of batteries.  That's good for the environment and good for the consumer too as they receive a device that always works and they *never* have to buy batteries.
 
However, when you are looking at an array such as the one in the photo at the top of this post, cost definitely comes into play.  In the marketplace of large scale economies, you need efficiency *and* cost to both be on the winning side.
 
And *that* is why today's post has tremendous potential.  It seems that scientists have recently figured out how to make solar cells using tin… that's right tin.  Recent announcements from both the US and the UK have made it clear that making cells using tin is now a viable alternative to the more expensive cells currently available.  The reason that tin is such a big deal here is because it is amazingly plentiful.  That, of course, brings up the old law of supply and demand.  The greater the supply, the lower the cost.  That means that creating solar cells using tin will greatly decrease the cost per unit making solar power a much more affordable alternative.
 
Now, the new tin cells are not without their problems.  They are currently not nearly as efficient at creating electricity as state of the cells available today.  However, the cost means you can buy a lot more of these that could potentially offset the efficiency problem with shear numbers.  Also as research continues, science will continue to evolve the tin cells making them more efficient.
 
There is also the fact that current high efficiency solar cells use lead… and we all know how environmentally friendly lead is.  Add to that how dangerous it is to humans and tin looks a lot more promising.
 
So, things continue to look up for the whole concept of solar power on a wide scale distribution basis.  Abundant sunshine can mean abundant energy, and that's good for all of us.

  WEST PALM BEACH, Florida - In cooperation with the U.S. Army, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. has successfully demonstrated optionally piloted flight of a Black Hawk helicopter, a significant step toward providing autonomous cargo delivery functionality to the U.S. Army. Sikorsky Aircraft is a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).


The Optionally Piloted Black Hawk (OPBH) Demonstrator, known as Sikorsky’s Manned/Unmanned Resupply Aerial Lifter (MURAL) Program, conducted the successful first flight demonstration on March 11 at Sikorsky’s Development Flight Center. The demonstration was conducted through the use of Sikorsky’s Matrix™ Technologies and advanced Ground Control Station (GCS) Technologies.

The OPBH demonstrated autonomous hover and flight operations while under the control of a man-portable GCS, demonstrating the capability for expeditionary operations and critical cargo resupply.

“The autonomous Black Hawk helicopter provides the commander with the flexibility to determine crewed or un-crewed operations, increasing sorties while maintaining crew rest requirements. This allows the crew to focus on the more ‘sensitive’ operations, and leaves the critical resupply missions for autonomous operations without increasing fleet size or mix,” said Mark Miller, Sikorsky Vice President of Research & Engineering.

The MURAL Program is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Aviation Development Directorate (ADD), the U.S. Army Utility Helicopters Project Office (UH PO) and Sikorsky. The UH PO is providing access to two UH-60MU Black Hawk helicopters and Sikorsky is applying the technology it has developed with Internal Research and Development funding.

Sikorsky has been developing the technology since 2007, and signed a Cooperative Research & Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army in 2013 to advance the program to a formal effort to demonstrate the full flexibility and value of a full authority flight control system. The effort includes demonstration of expeditionary ground control systems and precision control.

“The ADD’s mission is to focus on developing, demonstrating and applying critical technologies that enhance the capability, affordability, readiness and safety of Department of Defense aviation systems,” said Dr. William Lewis, Director, ADD. “The optionally piloted Black Hawk helicopter functionality stands to bring added value to DoD aviation systems, through the innovations being tested on the Black Hawk helicopter in the MURAL program.”

According to COL Thomas Todd, the Utility Helicopters Project Manager, “MURAL technology will advance material solutions related to Degraded Visual Environment operations. These solutions will provide critical flight control and flight handling quality improvements.”

Sikorsky introduced its Matrix™ Technology, a major research program, in July 2013 to develop, test and field systems and software that will improve significantly the capability, reliability and safety of flight for autonomous, optionally piloted, and piloted vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. The Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA) flew its first flight on July 26, 2013 and continues to explore new functionality in that portion of the program.

The application of Matrix Technology to the OPBH is an initial step toward demonstrating the flexibility, adaptability and capability to a range of aircraft systems. “Applying Matrix Technology to an already robust, reliable, and safe platform leverages these capabilities while expanding the system’s effectiveness,” Miller added.

Matrix™ aims to give rotary and fixed wing VTOL aircraft a high level of system intelligence needed to complete complex missions with minimal human oversight and at low altitudes where obstacles abound.
