Twitter Adds Photo Tagging!

Last Wednesday, Twitter made a fairly major announcement, giving users the ability to "tag" other people in pictures.  Oh that, and the ability to share 4 photos in a single tweet.
 
Cool huh?
 
The social media space just keeps on expanding and now with Instagram being a huge hit with the under 25 crowd, Twitter is working on become more like its competitor.  
 
Here are some of the details...
 
The tagging function allows you to tag up to 10 people in a photo while still having your 140 characters available to Tweet.  And if your tagged?  You'll get a notification of the photo going out.
 
The multiple photo function allows your to send 4 photos in one Tweet.  The 4   photos will automatically create a collage (similar to what you can do with Instagram).

FDA to Decide on Continued Use of Pap Test

I ran across this a few days ago and thought I would share it here.

While the Pap test is obviously not something dental, the testing and identifying of cancers in the female reproductive tract has a high degree of similarity with identifying cancers in the oral cavity.  In fact the Human Papilloma Virus 16 has been indicated as a causative agent in both cervical as well as oral pharyngeal cancers.

Since it was created by George Papanicolaou in the 1930s, the Pap test has been considered pretty much the gold standard for identifying cervical cancers.

However, over the past several years data has begun to accumulate that shows that HPV tests are actually better at finding cervical cancers than the Pap test. The interesting part of this is that while current data accumulated over the past 10 years shows that the HPV test is more accurate, current FDA regulations are such that an HPV test can only be used along with a Pap test.

As this data has become more well-known, the FDA has begun to look at things a little bit differently. In early March 2014 an FDA advisory panel voted unanimously to approve a HPV test as the 1st standalone cervical cancer screening test not requiring a Pap test as well. While this does not indicate a wholesale change by the FDA, the FDA very frequently takes these recommendations into account and changes policy.

 So what does this have to do with dentistry? The same virus indicated in cervical cancers has also been indicated by researchers as a causative agent of oral pharyngeal cancers that dentists, oral surgeons, and ENTs deal with. Current scientific thinking is a link between oral sex and the virus that causes cervical cancer.

 As someone who is pretty passionate about doing everything we can to detect oral pharyngeal cancers at their earliest stages, this topic is a major blip on my radar. Cancer of the mouth and throat can be not only life-threatening that terribly disfiguring to those that it affects. As more information becomes available on this topic rest assured I'll be covering it here.

Lasers and Why They Matter in a Modern Practice

Last night, a good friend of mine Dr. Mike Miyasaki was in town to do a seminar on diode lasers.
 
Traveling and lecturing can sometimes be a bit on the lonely side. So whenever I have a friend in town to give a presentation, I make every effort to attend and if possible spend some time together afterwards. Mike didn't head back to California in till early Friday afternoon so we not only got to hang out after the presentation, but we also got together and had breakfast this morning. It was really great to get to spend some quality time with a quality guy like Mike.
 
I love to learn! Whether it's reading books, reading articles, discussing with friends, or attending lectures I just love being exposed to quality information. So last night, as I listened to Mike discuss the advantages of diode lasers over other treatment modalities, I took special note of the questions he fielded from the other attendees.
 
Like many things in life, when you're exposed to something on a regular basis you tend to forget what life was like before any one of many modern conveniences. That's sort of what it's like with lasers. I thought to myself last night that I have 6 lasers in my practice and I've reached a point where I wouldn't want to practice without them.
 
Granted, there are ways to accomplish the same tasks without a laser, but for me considering how low the cost of lasers has become, the cost-benefit ratio falls strongly on the side of lasers.
 
Whether it is troughing of margins for fixed prosthetics, soft tissue crown lengthening, biopsies, frenectomies, or many other procedures, lasers have changed my clinical approach to treatment in many, many ways.
 
The diode lasers that Mike spoke about last night not only make things easier, but their price has fallen dramatically over the last few years. A practice can now invest in a diode laser for $5000 or less. That makes the decision-making a much easier process. When I began speaking on lasers about 15 years ago, diode lasers were 20 pound units that weighed around 25 pounds. Today's diode lasers are not only about 75% less in cost they have also shrunk in size. Some literally weigh only ounces.
 
Serve your practice is looking for a way to make procedures easier, faster, and with better clinical results I feel strongly you should take a look at the diode lasers on the market. The cost/benefit ratio is on your side. By a lot.

Cam Newton Surgery Leaked to Media through HIPAA Violation

Those of us in health care have long been aware of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.  The basic premise is that confidential health information can only be shared with entities that the patient agrees to.  
 
The idea, of course, was to prevent the random sharing of private information with anyone other than who the patient specified.  Basically the idea is to keep private information private…. and that's how it should be!
 
 
Basically (read the article in the link above for the complete story) here's what happened.  Cam Newton, for those of you who aren't sports fans, is the quarterback for the NFL's Carolina Panthers.  He's one of the league's premier players and incredibly well  known.  Tuesday, a caller to a sports radio call-in show called in to tell anyone listening that Cam Newton was to undergo ankle surgery on Wednesday.
 
When asked how he knew of this, since no one else had heard anything about it, the caller stated his wife was a nurse and had told him Newton was on the surgery schedule for Wednesday afternoon.
 
Neither the Carolina Panthers nor Cam Newton had made any statements about the surgery.  This meant that the caller had committed a major HIPAA infraction.  If his wife is identified, she could be terminated and her employer could be held liable as well.
 
One of my Top 10 Practice Predictions for 2014 was a greater focus on HIPAA from the federal government.  Something of this magnitude is going to bring an investigation and there may be serious personnel and financial implications.  Private means private.  It's just that simple.  I would highly recommend that doctors discuss this with staff and remind them of the extreme importance of security and compliance.

Testing Completed for ioSafe 214

For the past couple of months, I've been working with a pretty cool device from ioSafe.
 
If you've ever seen one of my technology lectures, chances are you've heard about the ioSafe company.  They make hard drives that are both fireproof and waterproof.  Imagine a device that can be heated to 1550F then thrown into 10 feet of fresh or  salt water for 72 hours and you can still get your data off of it!  That ability to withstand those extreme conditions are what set ioSafe apart.

Anytime you've got that much data from that many individuals sitting out there, it's going to be a target for hackers.  That's just a way of life.  That's the main reason that none of my Cloud data is actually incredibly valuable.  It's just stuff I didn't want on the hard drive of my laptop anymore, but didn't want to delete.  Short of articles in progress, I wouldn't cry if any of it was stolen, looked at, or deleted.  But that whole mentality kind of defeats the idea of anywhere data.  If you can only get stuff that isn't valuable to you, really what is the point?
 
Now we come to the ioSafe 214.  In addition to the waterproof and fireproof features listed above, this baby creates a personal cloud.  That means that I have 2TB of storage that connects to my network, but can be accessed via the Internet from anywhere.  The device features RAID storage to provide redundant backup and also allows me to access any of the data from any computer, my iPad, or my iPhone.  As long as I've got an Internet connection to the 214, I can access my data.  And setting it up to do all of this is a snap.  I simply read the instructions and boom, I was working with it in no time.

My Promotion at Dental Products Report

Over the years, I've had a great home for my writing and all the other fun publishing stuff at Dental Products Report Magazine.
 
It started at the ADA Annual Session in 1999 when I was approached about doing some articles for their sister publication Dental Practice & Finance.  I started out writing an occasional column for them, whenever they would call.
 
In the early 2000's I was offered the position of Technology Consultant with Dental Practice & Finance which allowed me to start editing & provide columns on a more regular basis.
 
However, terror struck when DP&F was discontinued and I was terrified I would be without a writing  home.  That terror was short lived as I was offered the opportunity to be Technology Columnist for Dental Products Report.  That position opened up a whole new chapter of my life as I was given a monthly column.
 
After a time as a columnist, I was asked to become DPR's Technology Editor where I was editing technology articles as well as continuing my own column which evolved into the Technology Evangelist column that I write to this day.
 
Now for the exciting part.  This week I was promoted from Technology Editor to Chief Dental Editor and given the lead over DPR's newly established Editorial Advisory Board.  Over the last 15 years I've been very proud and honored to be part of the DPR team and I've loved watching my role grow as more opportunities presented themselves.
 
I am truly honored and touched by the trust and faith put in me by the management team at Advanstar Dental Media.  I'm excited about what the future holds and I promise to continue to provide you the reader with the best  and most current info I can.
 
Lastly, I cannot thank you readers enough for your trust.  It is something I treasure and will continue to work hard to support.  Whether it is here on the blog or on the pages of Dental Products Report, I will give my all to make sure you get the best information I can deliver.

Honoring the Assistants… One Day at a Time

I work with some pretty special people.  Day in and day out, the office and my professional life are made much, much easier through the hard work of a very special team of ladies .
 
This week we decided to honor the dental assistants.  On Monday it was "Terri Day", on  Tuesday it was "Sam Day", and on Wednesday it was "Haley Day".  On their "day" they got a special long sleeved orange T-shirt with a special phrase honoring them.  They also got a gift card and their favorite snack treat.
 
Today they all are wearing their shirts and we are celebrating with a treat they all agreed on… ice cream!!!
 
I think often times in dentistry, doctors forget how much they rely on their assistants.  I'm really lucky to have 3 of the best on the planet.  Terri, Sam, and Haley do a great job of making the patients feel special and welcome.  They also keep the clinical aspect of what we do running like a well oiled machine.
 
I'm very grateful for them and for all they do.  I couldn't do what I do or take such good care of my patients if it were not for the hard work of these amazing 3 ladies.
 
I'm blessed to have them in my life and this week has been all about showing them how much we all care about them!

Beats Looks to Change How Music is "Served"

The music world has been going "streaming" for a while now.  In our office we used to have all of our music on the server and would serve it up to individual computers throughout the office.  Then came the music streaming revolution and we began using streaming services to bring the music to us over the Internet.  This was much easier and provided greater choices.
 
Now comes word that Beats Music is looking to change the way you get your streamed music.  As of March 07, 2014 Beats Music has opened up the API (Application Program Interface) to developers.  This means that third parties can create apps that use the beats library.

Testing is Beginning on Coltene CanalPro CL

I love endo.  Not just a little, mind you.  I really love it.
 
That's probably a sick thing for non-dentists to hear, but hey, if you are a patient and you are going to let your general dentist performa a root canal on you, wouldn't you rather, hear that the dentist  loves doing them?

I've also been lucky enough  to learn and work with some really talented and amazing endodontists.
 
Add on to that the fact the I do all my own endo and it's pretty easy to see that it's one of my very favorite dental procedures to perform.
 
I also love clinical testing and I really enjoy getting the latest devices (no matter what the speciality) and putting them through their clinical protocols.

A Big Thank You to Otterbox & Lessons We Can Learn from Customer Service

Over the years I've purchased a lot of gear.  I mean, I'm a gear head, and as such I've bought a lot of electronics and other types of tech stuff.
 
One of the things I've learned about all of those gadgets is it pays to protect them the best way you can.  One little slip can result in scratches, dings, or (Heaven forbid) a broken device.
 
That's why I've become a big believer in Otter Box.The company has created quite a reputation in the tech industry for making cases that protect the electronic gadgets that people like myself use and want to keep using despite the  bumps and drops that life delivers along the way.
 
I figure that over the years I've probably bought 15 or more Otter box cases for phones, tablets, and other devices.  Honestly I can't think of a single time that an Otter Box has let me down.  I've had some pretty spectacular drops over the years and every time I've done something like that, Otter Box has come through… and by that I mean bounces and no breaks, no scratches, no damage at all.
 
My favorite case is the Otter box Defender.  The last time I checked, it is their most expensive case.  It's also the thickest and "clunkiest", but it is also the one that is built to survive almost anything you can throw at it.
 
I've got a lot of devices, but when I get anew one, my first thought is always "does Otter box make a Defender Case for this?"  If so, the device goes in one STAT.
 
But you know, everything wears out eventually… and that is where this post is going.
 
As most of you great readers know, I travel quite a bit with my lectures and things for Dental Products Report and because of that, my iPhone and iPad take a decent beating from "road wear and tear".  Because of that I have both of them protected with Otter Box Defender cases.
 
One of the great things about the Defender series is that it has a snap-on lid.  The lid has a built in "kickstand" that allows the lid to lay flat on a surface and the "kickstand" will hold the iPad or iPhone up at an angle sort of like an easel.  This is a great feature for reading or watching videos.  It's a feature that I use daily for my iPad.  Recently on a trip, this kickstand broke.  I was bummed, but when you use something as often as I use the lid on my iPad, these things are bound to happen.
 
I checked my date of purchase and then went to the Otter Box website.  I turns out my Defender case has a 1 year warranty and my case was almost 2 years old.  I didn't want to have to buy an entirely new case, so I called customer service to see if I could somehow just purchase a lid for my system.
 
I called the toll free number and waited no longer than about 2 minutes for a very friendly and upbeat customer service rep to answer the phone.  I explained my situation and that my case was one year out of warranty.  Was there a way, I enquired, to just buy a new lid?  The answer was quick and simple.  No need to put me on hold.  No need to consult a supervisor.  No need to call or email me back.
 
I was immediately told "we want everyone to have a good experience with our products and even though you are out of warranty, we can see from your order history that you are a good customer and we are happy to send you a new cover at no charge."  All I had to do was to complete the normal warranty process listed on the website.  I called on Monday and the new lid was delivered on Friday.
 
The world (and the Internet) is full of stories of bad customer service.  I'm proud to be able to tell a story of outstanding customer service.  I've been an Otter Box customer for many years now and will continue to be.  They certainly could have politely told me i was out of warranty… instead they went above & beyond to provide me a customer experience I was not expecting.  I'm a customer for life based on this one experience.  I'm making this post to let Otter Box know how much I appreciate their products and how much I appreciate the way they treat me!

Brightsquid has been in the dental space for a while now, although they've been fairly "below the radar".  I thought I'd post the press release here in case any of you are members of the DenteMax network.

As I said in my Top 10 Predictions for 2014, we are going to see a greater focus on security in lots of ways, especially with communication between offices.

Fake Computer-Generated Studies Found In Renowned Scientific Journals

As someone who tries to do a fair amount of reading and research, there are times when in the middle of trying to digest something I stop and think to myself  "what the heck are these people trying to say?".

Now it turns out... they may be saying nothing at all.  Some investigations by scientists reveal that even peer reviewed journals (the gold standard for scientific publication) may be accepting articles written in scientific gibberish.

It's a sorry state of affairs, but something that was bound to happen, I suppose.  Whatever happened to writing your own stuff?  I mean that's what I do and I'm just a lowly Technology Editor for a dental publication.
