CDC: Half of American Adults Have Periodontal Disease


Data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show high prevalence rates of periodontal disease in the U.S. population; American Academy of Periodontology encourages annual comprehensive periodontal evaluations to assess for disease 

 

August 30, 2012 – Chicago - One out of every two American adults aged 30 or older has periodontal disease, according to new findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A study titled “Prevalence of Periodontitis in Adults in the United States: 2009 and 2010,” estimates that 47.2 percent, or 64.7 million American adults, have mild, moderate or severe periodontitis. In adults over age 65, prevalence rates increase to 70.1 percent. This study is published in the Journal of Dental Research, the official publication of the International and American Associations for Dental Research.

 

The findings were collected as part of CDC’s 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a program of studies designed to assess the health and nutritional status of adults and children in the United States. The 2009-2010 survey included, for the first time, a full-mouth periodontal examination, making it the most comprehensive survey of oral health ever conducted in the U.S. The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has been working closely with CDC since 2003 to determine the extent, severity and prevalence of periodontal disease in the U.S.

 

Previous NHANES estimates of periodontal disease relied on partial mouth periodontal examination (PMPE) protocols that collected measurements from two randomly selected quadrants of the mouth and assessed probing depth and attachment loss at two sites per tooth. Because periodontal disease is not evenly distributed in the mouth, prevalence estimates from surveys using PMPE protocols may have underestimated the severity of the disease within the U.S. population by as much as 50 percent. The 2009-2010 NHANES survey collected measurements from six sites per tooth for all teeth (except third molars) in U.S. adults. Researchers assessed periodontitis because it is the most destructive form of periodontal disease; gingivitis was not measured.

 

“This is the most accurate picture of periodontal disease in the U.S. adult population we have ever had,” said Pamela McClain, DDS, President of the American Academy of Periodontology and a practicing periodontist in Aurora, Colorado. “We now have a precise measure of the prevalence of periodontal disease, and can better understand the true severity and extent of periodontal disease in our country.”

 

The data indicate prevalence disparities among certain segments of the U.S. population. Periodontal disease is higher in men than women (56.4 percent vs. 38.4 percent) and is highest in Mexican-Americans (66.7 percent) compared to other races. Other segments with high prevalence rates include current smokers (64.2 percent); those living below the federal poverty level (65.4 percent); and those with less than a high school education (66.9 percent).

 

According to Dr. Paul Eke, MPH, PhD, lead author and CDC epidemiologist, the findings may drive public health policy decisions. “We have demonstrated a high burden of periodontal disease in the adult U.S. population, especially among adults 65 and older. Periodontal disease is associated with age, and as Americans live longer and retain more of their natural teeth, periodontal disease may take on more prominence in the oral health of the U.S adult population. Maintaining good periodontal health is important to the overall health and well-being of our aging population. Our findings support a need for public health programs to improve the oral health of adults.”

 

Co-author Robert Genco, DDS, PhD, Distinguished Professor at The State University of New York at Buffalo and Past President of the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), believes these findings elevate periodontal disease as a public health concern. “We now know that periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent non-communicable chronic diseases in our population, similar to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.”

 

The 2009-2010 NHANES periodontal disease data support the need for comprehensive periodontal evaluations performed annually by a member of the dental team including a dentist, dental hygienist or periodontist. According to Dr. McClain, this includes examining every tooth and measuring both attachment loss and probing depth to get the most accurate assessment of periodontal disease. “Many of our patients have periodontal disease and do not know it. As dental professionals, it is more important than ever that we provide patients with a comprehensive periodontal evaluation annually to determine their disease status.”

 

The American Academy of Periodontology’s Comprehensive Periodontal Therapy Statement, published in the July 2011 issue of the Journal of Periodontology, outlines specific procedures that should be included in annual comprehensive periodontal evaluations to receive an accurate diagnosis, including both probing depth and attachment loss measurements.

Garrison sues CompositeSmart for breach of contract, misappropriation of trade secrets

Garrison Dental Solutions, LLC has filed a suit in Michigan state court against Mr. John Boos and CompositeSmart, LLC, alleging breach of contract, misappropriation of trade secrets, common law and statutory conversion, and breach of federal trademark law. The lawsuit states that Mr. Boos, a former operations manager at Garrison, was present at meetings in which key elements of new designs were discussed. Those key elements are now in products being offered by CompositeSmart, LLC. Moreover, the suit alleges that Mr. Boos was working to launch his start-up company to sell directly competitive products, and subsequently took Garrison’s property and information six months prior to his departure from the company in violation of his employment contract. Garrison is suing CompositeSmart in order to protect its investment in its product development technologies.

Garrison revolutionized the process of Class II composite restorations with the introduction of theComposi-Tight© sectional matrix system to the dental industry in 1997, and has had a steady stream of sectional matrix innovations over the past decade. Composi-Tight offers distinct clinical benefits, such as reduced flash and finishing time while improving interproximal contacts, delivering an improved method of placing direct composite restorations. Furthermore, the suit alleges that the name CompositeSmart is designed to suggest that its products are related to Garrison’s Composi-Tight line of products. Next Generation Satellite from NASA could be using an Android Smartphone

In the never ending quest for knowledge as well as doing so while saving money, NASA is now preparing to launch small satellites using Android phones.  They will be known as "PhoneSats and fall under the approach of "release early, release often".
 
I was fascinated to find this info on the NASA website & wanted to share it with all of you.  As a geek and a tech lover, this is amazing.  Here is the info, direct from the NASA website:
 
NASA's Smartphone Nanosatellite

NASA's PhoneSat project will demonstrate the ability to launch the lowest-cost and easiest to build satellites ever flown in space – capabilities enabled by using off-the-shelf consumer smartphones to build spacecraft.

A small team of engineers working on NASA's PhoneSat at the agency's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., aim to rapidly evolve satellite architecture and incorporate the Silicon Valley approach of "release early, release often" to small spacecraft.

To achieve this, NASA's PhoneSat design makes extensive use of commercial-off-the-shelf components, including an unmodified, consumer-grade smartphone. Out of the box smartphones already offer a wealth of capabilities needed for satellite systems, including fast processors, versatile operating systems, multiple miniature sensors, high-resolution cameras, GPS receivers, and several radios.

NASA engineers kept the total cost of the components to build each of the three prototype satellites in the PhoneSat project to $3,500 by using only commercial-off-the-shelf hardware and keeping the design and mission objectives to a minimum for the first flight. 

NASA PhoneSat engineers also are changing the way missions are designed by rapidly prototyping and incorporating existing commercial technologies and hardware. This approach allows engineers to see what capabilities commercial technologies can provide, rather than trying to custom-design technology solutions to meet set requirements. Engineers can rapidly upgrade the entire satellite's capabilities and add new features for each future generation of PhoneSats.

Each NASA PhoneSat nanosatellite is one standard CubeSat unit in size and weighs less than four pounds. A CubeSat is a miniaturized satellite in the shape of a cube that measures approximately 4 inches (10 cm).

Flies low-cost consumer electronics in space

NASA's prototype smartphone satellite, known as PhoneSat 1.0, is built around the Nexus One smartphone made by HTC Corp., running Google's Android operating system. The Nexus One acts as the spacecraft onboard computer. Sensors determine the orientation of the spacecraft while the smartphone's camera can be used for Earth observations. Commercial-off-the-shelf parts include a watchdog circuit that monitors the systems and reboots the phone if it stops sending radio signals. 

NASA's PhoneSat 1.0 satellite has a basic mission goal–to stay alive in space for a short period of time, sending back digital imagery of Earth and space via its camera, while also sending back information about the satellite's health.

To prepare for such a mission, NASA has successfully tested PhoneSat 1.0 in various extreme environments, including thermal-vacuum chambers, vibration and shock tables, sub-orbital rocket flights and high-altitude balloons.

Additional features, more capabilities

NASA's PhoneSat 2.0 will equip a newer Nexus S smartphone made by Samsung Electronics running Google's Android operating system to provide a faster core processor, avionics and gyroscopes. 

PhoneSat 2.0 also will supplement the capabilities of PhoneSat 1.0 by adding a two-way S-band radio to allow engineers to command the satellite from Earth, solar panels to enable longer-duration missions, and a GPS receiver. In addition, PhoneSat 2.0 will add magnetorquer coils – electro-magnets that interact with Earth's magnetic field – and reaction wheels to actively control the satellite's orientation in space. 

The Future of PhoneSat

NASA's PhoneSat 2.0 will lay the foundation for new capabilities for small-sized satellites while advancing breakthrough technologies and decreasing costs of future small spacecraft. 

By building on NASA's PhoneSat 2.0 architecture, mission designers could more affordably accomplish the following kinds of future missions:

Using distributed sensors to conduct Heliophysics missions.

Expected to launch in 2013, NASA's upcoming Edison Demonstration of Small Satellite Networks mission-part of the Small Spacecraft Technology Program-will demonstrate the possibility of conducting heliophysics measurements using small spacecraft.

Qualifying new technologies and components for space flight
Conducting low-cost Earth observations
Exploring the moon and beyond

Three NASA PhoneSats systems (two PhoneSat 1.0's and one PhoneSat 2.0) are scheduled to launch aboard the maiden flight of Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Va., later this year. 

The PhoneSat project is a small spacecraft technology demonstration mission funded by NASA's Space Technology Program which is managed by the Office of the Chief Technologist. The Space Technology Program develops and matures broadly applicable technology essential for scientific, robotic, and human exploration beyond low Earth orbit, ensures the agency’s technology portfolio contains both the near-term mission-driven and long-range transformative technology required to meet our nation’s exploration and science goals, and advances revolutionary concepts and capabilities, lowering development costs and reducing risk for NASA missions by engaging NASA Centers, small businesses, academia, industry, other Government agencies and international partners.

Smart Autoclaves are On the Horizon...

For years now, those in health care who have a need for rapid sterilization procedures have turned to SciCan.  The company's Statim line of autoclaves are well known as the gold standard when it comes to rapid and reliable sterilization.  The Statim line can actually deliver instruments ten times faster than conventional chamber style autoclaves.
 
In my office, we currently run 2 MIdMark M11 chamber devices and one Statim 2000.  We use the MidMark units for the routine "bread and butter" and have the Statim for when we need something in a hurry.  Frequently this means sterilizing something like a laser or electric handpiece that are in constant demand clinically.
 
Now, comes the 4th Generation of Statim with an interesting new capability… Internet connectivity.  The new G4 series comes with an Ethernet port and can plug directly into your office network (for those who don't have Ethernet access near their autoclaves a wireless module is available as well).  This connection allows the Statim G4 to communicate with service  personnel that you designate to monitor.  The idea is for the device to be able to detect when a problem is coming and ask for service before the problem occurs.

It also allows your designated service department to connect remotely, if need be, to monitor the system and help troubleshoot without the delay in sending a service tech to the office.  Should the problem require a technician, this ensures the  proper parts can be loaded on the service vehicle.  In the long run, this should increase uptime for the office and decrease the potential for needing offsite repairs.
 
The device also features a USB port in the front that will allow the doctor or staff to download information regarding all cycles run to a jump drive.
 
We'll be putting the new G4 4000 through its paces in our office in the very near future.  I'm really excited to see how the Internet connection performs and to see how the  new device works in the practice.
 
There are a lot of companies out there working on devices with similar connectivity, with some already on the market.  This will be the first one I've gotten my hands on.  This should be fun!

SonicFill Presentation this Friday at Goetze Dental

This Friday from 8:30 to about noon, I will be at Goetze Dental here in KC doing a lecture and hands-on demonstration of the Kerr SonicFill system.  I've personally been using the product for about 18 months (at least some of that time in beta) and have been very impressed with both the handpiece and the composite that it delivers.  Our post op clinicals are looking good and I've just received word from a friend of mine who does dental research that his university based study is looking at one year  post op clinicals whose results "are looking good".
 
SonicFill uses a Sonic handpiece to vibrate a very highly filled composite and turn it into a constancy that is very easy to place, sculpt, mold, etc.  Then the material is cured with a high intensity curing light.  Kerr is advising a depth of cure of up to 5mm.
 
This is a pretty amazing system that could very well change the way you dare placing composites.  It provides a huge increase in efficiency of placement while maintaining the quality of our restorative dentistry.

SmartThings: Make Your World Smarter

In the late 80's and early 90's I was hooked on a system called X10.  It was a series of modules that you plugged electrical appliances into and then the modules plugged into the outlets.  The system let you turn the appliances off & on with a remote control.  You could also dim lights and other fun stuff.
 
Now comes SmartThings which is like the system mentioned above on steroids.  Imagine something like I've mentioned above paired with your wireless network, your phone, the internet, and The Cloud.
 
Sound interesting?  To me it sounds like a geeks dream come true.  Take a look at the project on Kickstarter and make *sure* you watch the video.  You'll be as impressed as I am.

Could an Apple iPad Mini be on the Horizon… Like September?

It seems the website Apple.pro has received images that it says are of the much rumored iPad Mini.
 
Even though Steve Jobs wasn't fond of devices that fell between the iPad and the iPod form factors, there *are* consumers out there that have held out for any number of reasons.  I mean there is a certain segment of the market that just isn't going to spend the kind of money it takes to own an iPad.  Those same people, however, may well see the value if the device was at a better price point.  Some others would probably like to have the an Apple device, if only the size was a better fit for their lifestyle.  However, just because these market segments exist, doesn't mean that this product is real.  The Internet is always serving up new rumors on new Apple hardware.
 
The rumors surrounding this one are a 1024x768 screen, which should be under 8 inches, and will have a price that is sub $300.
 
Is it real?  Who knows.  I originally thought the iPad wouldn't catch on...

Wallpaper May Hold Key to Protecting Your Wifi From Hackers

WiFi really is pretty much everywhere nowadays.  Heck drive around your neighborhood with your phone open to its WiFi connection screen and just watch as access points pop up as you drive along.  We've become a society hooked on the easy and speedy wireless standard… and it will only continue.
 
The problem?  Despite security protocols designed to prevent hacking, given enough time someone with access to your WiFi signal can probably gain access.  It seems the only way to protect your signal is to *not have* a signal, and that, of course, is exactly what makes WiFi so great for the user.
 
So what can you do?  Well, soon some scientists in France may be able to solve your problem with… wait for it… wallpaper!
 
Yup, the idea is wallpaper that is covered with an ink that is imbedded with silver particles.  Amazingly this ink blocks Wifi from getting in or out, but won't block cell phone signals.
 
Amazing?  You bet.  Heck with something like that, you might even be able to convince me to redecorate.

A Big Thanks to Henry Schein for Hosting the Practice Solutions Summit

For the past 2 1/2 days, I've been spending time in a think tank of sorts with the folks from Henry Schein Practice Solutions in Deer Valley, Utah.  I've been here as part of the Practice Solutions Summit which is an event where the company brings in practice management consultants and dental technology types to show us where they are going and to have us help them with thoughts on how to improve.

 

I'm not at liberty to discuss much of what I saw these last couple of days, but suffice it to say that I think Dentrix users have some things to be excited about in the future.  

 

My hats off to the gang at Schein for putting these types of events together.  It's always fun to be in a room with a lot of smart people.  It's true that the sum is greater than the individual parts.  I always come away with some great information and it's a good feeling to know you've contributed to helping make something better for the profession.

 

While I can't divulge anything currently, I've been assured that when the time is right, I'll be given the green light to pass along the information.  If you are a Dentrix user, you'll definitely want to either follow the blog or check back on a regular basis...

Microsoft Receives Patent for "Advanced inductive charging pad for portable devices "

Last week I posted about the ability to charge your devices from an upcoming generation of Ultrabooks.  

 

This week while rummaging around the US Patent Office website (what, that's not where you spend your spare time?)  I stumbled upon a similar idea by Microsoft.  Seeing two devices recently that are working to allow you to charge by simply being close to a device (I know that is a greatly simplified version of the concept) looks to be coming to us from multiple sources in the not too distant future.

 

As someone who spends a fair amount of time on the road, I welcome the idea of being able to charge my devices just by getting them in the vicinity of the charging device.  Seeing Microsoft exploring the concept gives me a bit of comfort that we might actually see thins develop into an actual physical device or add-on component.

 

Of course, filing a patent doesn't mean that a build is a sure thing, but when Intel and Microsoft both start looking at something, that gives me a better feeling that there just might be a concrete product or two on the horizon...

Notably, Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-PA) introduced the Dent- Chew Brush and delivered product samples to Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD). This evolved into a bipartisan effort joined by other members of the House and Senate in pursuit of NIH funding to sponsor R&D to provide limited product production, to be followed by efficacy testing.

Dent-Chew Brush, LLC also had collaborative partners in The Creighton University School of Dentistry and The University of Maryland School of Dentistry who joined the NIH application for funding. Dr. Mark A. Latta, Dean of Creighton University School of Dentistry, authored the protocol for testing efficacy. Dr. Douglas M. Barnes, DDS, MS, Professor and Chief of the Division of General Dentistry Director, Advanced Education in General Dentistry at The University of Maryland School of Dentistry was asked to join the funding effort by Dr. Latta in order to proved two separate sites and populations in testing for efficacy. Although unsuccessful at that time, it is the intent that such testing of the Dent-Chew Brush will clearly define a new dental space in the advancement of Oral Hygiene.

More than 4,000 Dental Professionals Gather in Las Vegas for Sirona’s CEREC® 27 and a half year Anniversary Celebration

Dental Professionals Witness Launch of

Long Island City, New York (August 17, 2012) – A record number of dental professionals gathered in Las Vegas at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino for Sirona’s CEREC 27 and a half year Anniversary Celebration where they witnessed the launch of two major products: the new CEREC Omnicam 3D intraoral camera and Schick 33 intraoral sensor.  

 

Sirona Chairman and CEO Jost Fischer launched the CEREC Omnicam and new Schick 33 sensor by unveiling the products center-stage in front of thousands of enthusiastic customers and dental professionals. Attendees were then treated to detailed clinical presentations of the products from Sirona advocates, Dr. Sameer Puri and Dr. Andreas Bindl and dozens of other notable speakers and educators.

ONC-ATcB Certifies Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access To Help dentists secure STAGE ONE, year one Medicaid EHR Incentive payments

ONC-ATcB Certifies Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access To Help dentists secure STAGE ONE, year one Medicaid EHR Incentive payments

 

Henry Schein Practice Solutions, Inc (Nasdaq:HSIC) announced today that its Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access 7.6 software was certified as a Complete EHR by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®). This product allows Dentrix Enterprise users to adopt, implement or upgrade to a certified Electronic Health Record (EHR), which is the first requirement to receive Stage One, Year One Medicaid Incentive Payments. 

 

Dentrix Enterprise is an electronic dental record designed specifically for community health centers, hospitals, universities and large dental organizations that require centralized data and robust reporting across multiple locations. With the release of Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access 7.6, Dentrix Enterprise users can now apply for government funding through the EHR Incentive Program which will provide incentive payments to help them improve their organization’s technology. 

 

“Many oral health providers have heard about the EHR Incentive Program but don’t know how to receive government funding. Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access ensures that eligible providers can receive Stage One, Year One funding, as long as they meet all of the other criteria,” said Pam Reece, Director of Specialty and Enterprise Solutions at Henry Schein Practice Solutions. “We are excited to be part of the federal government’s effort to improve the quality, safety, cost and efficiency of health care through the HITECH Act.” 

 

Dentrix Enterprise Meaningful Use Access 7.6 was certified on May 1, 2012, by CCHIT, an Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB) in accordance with the applicable eligible provider certification criteria adopted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The 2011–2012 criteria support the Stage One, Year One meaningful use measures required to qualify eligible providers and hospitals for funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

 

The ONC-ATCB 2011/2012 certification program tests and certifies that Complete EHRs meet all of the 2011/2012 criteria and EHR modules meet one or more—but not all—of the criteria approved by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) for either eligible provider or hospital technology. 

 

“CCHIT is pleased to be testing and certifying products so that companies are now able to offer these products to providers who wish to purchase and implement certified EHR technology and achieve meaningful use in time for the 2011–2012 incentives,” said Karen M. Bell, M.D., M.S.S., Chair, CCHIT.

 

ONC-ATCB 2011/2012 certification conferred by CCHIT does not represent an endorsement of the certified EHR technology by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services nor does it guarantee the receipt of incentive payments.
