Motorola Xoom Sales Not Nearly Good Enough

Motorola has released their quartely statement, and it seems that their flagship tablet, the Xoom (which I own), is not doing well... at all.
The company stated they sold 11 million devices that are mobile, but only 440,000 were Xoom tablets.  That's a scary bad number.
As I stated, I am a Xoom owner and I really do like the tablet.  I'm also an iPad 1 owner and I like that device as well,  However, the Xoom... with its tight integration to my Google contacts & calendar is easier for me to use "on the fly" since I don't need to view my calendar on a browser (as I do on the iPad) and my contacts synch on the fly, without having to connect it to my Mac.
However, for advanced uses, meaning apps, there is no comparison.  The Apple App Store completely blows Android out of the water.  I love the way the Xoom does the basic functions, but when it comes to most of the other things that are great to do with tablets, Apple leads... and by far.
In my opinion, this is a two fold problem.  1. Google needs to definitely improve the quality and quantity of the Apps it offers.  2. Motorola needs to market the Xoom in a better manner.  Many people don't even know the device exists.

Automating One More Link in the Backup Chain with Liptak Dental

Starting the first of next week, I'm going to be installing a backup device & service from Liptak Dental.

 

In a nutshell, the process involves installing a special backup device, which is a portable hard drive.  This device then automatically and routinely backsup your data onsite as well as sending the backup to the cloud.  Both backups keep multiple copies so that if you suffer data corruption you can basically look back through the backups until you find one that was done before the problem occurred.

 

The backups are also monitored daily.  That means that if something fails to happen the way it should, you get a call from the company and they will help you solve the problem.

 

With a service that is geared to the dental environment, HIPPA secure, automated, and easy to install, I'm excited to be giving this a try.  I'll report back with updates on how the install went and how it works.

Technology for Medicine Now Exclusive Distributor of Fotona Lightwalker Lasers

In an interesting turn of events, Lares Research is no longer in the laser business.  After over 10 years of sellling lasers, Lares has decided to bow out.

I was expecting a press release which has yet to arrive, but i have the following info coroborated by 2 sources:

The Fotona line of lasers will now be exclusively distributed in the United States by Technology 4 Medicine in San Clemente, CA.

Lares will be involved as the importer, but will no longer be involved in sales or service.  Current Lares laser employees, including the sales staff, has been transitioned over to Tech 4 Med.

The Fotona Lightwalker lasers will be shown in the Tech 4 Med booth at the AGD meeting this weekend.

Google Acquires Facial Recognition Software Startup Pittpatt

Google just keeps the acquisitions coming.

 

The latest knews is from Pittpatt which was developed at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh.  It is a facial recognition company that has the ability to match faces over videos, pictures, and other types of data.

 

Here is what the folks at Pittpatt had to say about the acquisition:

Needless to say, Google has got to have some plans for this stuff.  I'm imagining something that would work with Android on my Smartphone.  Can I dream a minute here?  Imagine walking  into a room and discreetly "scanning" the room wtih your phone.  Then a list of everyone you have in your Contacts pops up with pertinent data about them.  Eat your heart out Dale Carnegie!  :-)

 

Of course it may just be used to help ID every photo of your Aunt Bessie that you have in Picasa... but I still want it on my phone!  Google are you listening?

Gadget Use Causes Up to 25% of Accidents

Like you probably hadn't figured it out already, having a smart phone, or iPod, or any other sleek cool gadget, can be distracting.  I'm sure we've all done it at some point or another.  What I'm really hoping for is that we've all learned enough about this that we are all smarter than to try and play with gadgets while we're in a heavy, rolling piece of steel.

 

Now comes a study from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) that states as many as 25% or car accidents in the U.S. are can be traced to distracted drivers.  That means texting, talking, answering, looking for music, ad nauseum.

 

As I've said before... even I managed to stop tinkering with gadgets while driving and if I can... I'm sure you can too!

New Greener & More Efficient Toothpaste Delivery

Even dentists hate toothpaste tubes.  They aren't very efficient which means they are wasteful.  They are also messy and sometimes hard to control.
However, I think Designers Sang Min Yu and Wong Sang Lee are onto something here with their idea that they call "Save Paste".
It's basically a disposable cardboard container in the shape of a wedge that is loaded from thin to thick.  You simply press the cardboard to remove all the paste (flattening much more easily that the current tube design).
When you are done, you simply recycle the package.  Simple & efficient!  No word on when we can expect this better mousetrap... but I hope it's soon.

Mozilla Being Forced to Deal with the End of Google Toolbar

For years... literallly, Firefox users have been able to use an add-on that was composed of a Google search box, server storage of bookmarks, as well as Google page ranking.
Now, Google has stated they will not continue to produce the toolbar and that it will not work with Firefox 5.0.  This has forced the Mozilla foundation (creators of Firefox) to try and find some type of workaround so that users continue to upgrade.  The fear is that users who love the Google toolbar won't upgrade to 5.0
No word on a solution as of yet and no word on the reason for the decision by Google.

Spotify Launches in US

Spotify is a music service with an interesting idea, let anyone play any music... anywhere.

The idea is an interesting one. A subscription allows you access to almost any song, without the user having to pay for the song. That's not the way any other online services are currently working.

It also allows you to create playlists which you can access from anywhere as well as being able to share them.

I can see this being popular in a dental environment for patient entertainment.

It's a very cool concept that is being rolled out in the US by invitation only, but has been available in Europe for a few years now.

Samsung to Release Galaxy S2 - The Next Generation Galaxy

Last fall I left my old Palm Pre and decided to go with the Samsung Epic on the Sprint network. Interestingly enough, the "Epic" is known as the Galaxy on other networks.
So, it is with some excitement that I tell you that the next generation of this phone will hit the US in August. No idea of who it will be available from and no idea on costs, but if you are thinking about a change of phones, I can highly recommend the Galaxy line.
Mine runs my entire life and does everything I need it to and sometimes more.

Samsung to release Galaxy S2 in U.S. next month

SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. will release its flagship Galaxy S2 smartphone in the U.S. market next month, the chief of its mobile business division said Wednesday, a move that will likely pit the product against the forthcoming iPhone.

"We expect to release the Galaxy S2 in the U.S. market sometime in August," Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung's mobile business and digital imaging, told reporters at a media briefing.

In South Korea, Samsung launched the Galaxy S2, a faster, thinner and lighter version of its Galaxy S smartphone in April. The model, later released in Japan and Europe, recorded sales of 3 million units in less than two months of its debut.

Sad News

I received this email last night.  Please keep the family in your prayers...

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that CK Dental founder Chuck Keyler of Orange, California, has passed away.

Chuck founded CK Dental in 1997 and built it to become one of the most reputable and recognizable names in the dental instrument industry. Over the years, he made special connections with countless friends and colleagues in the industry, who are all very sad about his passing.

Chuck was a great teacher and a source of inspiration. He gave all of us at CK Dental an incredible amount of guidance and support; he was a hard and dedicated contributor. CK Dental employees and management of both our dental and orthopedic divisions are mourning the loss of our colleague and past CEO of our dental division. We will remember him fondly and thank him for his infinite wisdom and encouragement.

The "CK" in CK Dental will carry on the memory of our good friend Chuck Keyler. This loss will leave an endless void in our personal and professional lives.

Chuck is survived by his wife Linda, and four children.

Sony Bringing 2 Different Form Factors to Tablet Market

I saw this story on the CNN website and found it intriguing.  Since the arrival of the iPad, everyone has been excited about tablets (including me), but everyone is creating devices that really mimic the iPad in look & feel.  Sony has taken the tablet idea and applied some outside the box thinking to the form factor for 2 devices that will be arriving in the fall.
One is a "folded magazine" design while the other is smaller and features a "clam shell" look.  Both of these have great aesthetic appearance.  I'm curious to see how they sell.  Sometimes taking a step outside is a good thing and sometimes it just confuses the consumer.

STEVE SEMMELMAYER BRINGS MARKET EXPERTISE TO S-RAY INC.

I've been following S-Ray for a while now.  Although I haven't seen anything concrete from the company yet, the idea they are working on is certainly intriguing.

Curve Dental Taking Images to the Cloud

In February in Chicago, I got a private demo of Curve's new imaging piece that literally allowed them to take a radiograph with a sensor directly from the browser.  I came away impressed.

 

Recently I received the following note from one of my contacts at Curve...

 

A big day for Curve Dental.
This morning we captured our first pan image using Curve Hero's imaging features. The attached image was captured using a Planmeca ProOne unit using a TWAIN driver (I took this photo using my iPhone). I imagine the pan unit took eight seconds to scan, and then after that the image appeared on screen in about five to six more seconds. So, the image was captured directly to the Curve servers and then bounced back to the computer we were working on in less than 15 seconds. There are two clinician at this practice and they were both impressed with the speed and were of the opinion that the image quality was not a factor (they didn't notice anything different about image quality).
We also captured intra-oral images this morning without a hiccup, using a USB intra-oral camera that the practice purchased off eBay for $100 (Chinese made; I imagine that with a "real" intra-oral camera the experience will only be better). We also captured PA's using a Suni sensor. Still some minor tweaking required only on the PA (which probably had something to do with that particular sensor, as we've had nothing but success in lab trials with a different sensor), but if you stop and think about what we just did--capture images directly to the cloud--it's pretty awesome.
FDA approval is pending but we expect clearance very soon.

Amazon Takes Cloud Player to Unlimited Storage

As an Amazon customer, I purchase a lot of things through the online retailer. As I've blogged here before, when Amazon opened their music download service/store I was an immediate fan because the songs were sold in MP3 format & not in a proprietary and encrypted format. This was what I really wanted... not so I could share the songs illegally, but so I could play them anywhere on any device I own (and as a geek, I've got a few devices!)


Recently Amazon brought their Cloud Drive service to market so that you didn't even need to download the songs... you can just play them with any device that has an Internet connection. The only drawback was that storage was limited, but not anymore!

I received an email informing me that all paid Cloud Drive subscriptions have unlimited storage. Now you can truly take your music collection to the cloud!

Registration is now Open for the American Academy of Periodontology’s 97th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Florida

CHICAGO – July 12, 2011 – The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) will host its 97th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Florida from November 12-15, 2011. Attendee registration is now open, and all members of the dental team are encouraged to register to learn about the latest advancements in periodontology.

The four-day meeting will include a variety of educational and scientific sessions in eight distinct program tracks, covering topics including dental implants, periodontal-systemic relationships, periodontal plastic and oral reconstructive surgery, and regeneration and tissue engineering. Traditional continuing education (CE) courses, as well as hands-on workshops and clinical technique showcases will be offered. In total, over 60 educational and scientific sessions will be presented.

Otterbox Defender for Motorola Xoom

As I prepared to write my article on tablets for DPR this spring, I decided to by a Motorola Xoom so that I could have personal experience with both the iPad and an Android tablet.
The Xoom was the first device on the market running Android Honeycomb which is the first generation of the Android operating system specifically designed for the tablet format that is hoping to compete with the iPad.
Like the iPad, the Xoom is not an inexpensive device and when you plunk down between $600-800 for a table t device you want to make sure it's protected right?  Right?  I thought so.
To ensure that the Xoom didn't get scratched, dented, or broken, I made sure it was protected by the Otterbox Defender.  I've been a big fan of Otterbox products for a while now.  They basically seal your device inside a polycarbonate shell that protects it and cushions it in case of a drop.

How Do You Guru?

Over the years, I've had a chance to work with some really good companies.  Interestingly enough, several of the companies I've helped/consulted with have been involved in the sector of educating dental patients.  This is truly an area of dental practice that cannot be taken lightly by the industry.  Our profession has become (and continues to be) a rapidly changing/evolving aspect of healthcare.  As things change, procedures and treatment options also change so it is extremely important that our patients have the most accurate and concise information possible in order for them to be able to make the most informed decisions possible about their treatment.
I've always looked upon myself as a sort of "guide" when it comes to treatment.  I want to provide the patient with all the info they need and then help them make a decision that is the best one based upon their goals & needs.  Needless to say, it's important to provide them with as much information as possible.  This is where the whole sector of computerized patient education comes into play.
For the last several days, I've been locked away in a think tank type situation with the brain trust of Reality Engineering who are the folks that create and update Guru.  While I'm not at liberty to discuss the things I learned the last few days (I've been sworn to secrecy) I can tell you that Guru is making serious strides.  They are always creating new content which can be easily downloaded by any office team member and this means that it is truly an always evolving tool for the office & patients.
They are due to launch the next version of their software in the fall and Guru 5.0 promises to be a great addition.  One of the neat things about Guru is its ability to integrate a patient's own images (intra-oral pictures, x-rays, etc) directly into the presentations with a 'drag and drop" interface.  The office can then draw on the photos,  write on them, you get the idea.  They even have Guru available for the iPad!  I wrote about this nifty feature in a recent article in Dental Products Report that I called "Rewrite the History Books... the World is Flat"

Curve Dental’s Free, Web-based Patient Education Software a Part of the Midwestern University’s Dental School Experience Midwestern’s Dental Students Use the Cloud to Educate Their Patients on Better Oral Health

OREM, UT— Curve Dental, developers of Web-based dental software, announced that Midwestern University’s College of Dental Medicine would use the company’s free, Web-based patient education software, CurveEd, in the school’s dental clinic. The software will be used by the school’s dental students to educate their patients on how to achieve better oral health.

CurveEd provides more than 60 different dental patient education videos in 3D in 11 different categories. Each video is professionally narrated, covering a wide range of topics from restorative procedures to cosmetic procedures to endodontics. Created by a team of dentists, every video is accurate with regard to anatomy and procedure, but is tempered with a light narrative and artistic style. Patient education helps the dental professional build trust by providing their patients with an understanding of their current oral health condition and proposed treatment and outcomes.

CurveEd allows the dental team to show patient education videos within the practice or send a Web link to their patient via e-mail. When a video link is sent by e-mail, CurveEd tracks what video link was sent to which patient and whether or not the patient opened the e-mail and clicked on the link to the video. Detailed tracking can help the practice build a comprehensive patient history and show proper jurisprudence.

As a Web-based application, CurveEd can be used on a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone and other similar mobile devices. To access the software, navigate to www.curveed.com and create a free account. Once you have created an account, you access the patient education library from any computer with Internet access and a browser. Registration requires little more than a name and e-mail address. Initial registration provides the practice with access to about one third of the library. By simply referring CurveEd to two colleagues the doctor or team member will have instant access to the entire library while giving other dental professionals the opportunity to utilize the free service in their practices.

Apple May Be Blocking Live Event Filming from iPhones

Here's a story with a bit of big brother attached to it.

It seems that Apple (and I'm an Apple fan) is seeking to protect copyrighted material in a rather unique way.  This unique protection involves a way to sense when a device owner is attempting to record a live event by either audio or video and then disabling that function.  This would, in effect, prevent the concept of "bootlegging" live events.  The concept is that the camera or microphone would be automatically shut off somehow thus effectively preventing the user from recording the event in any way.

 

The concept, of course, is to protect artists who might be doing a pay-per-view event or broadcasters who have  paid a premium to broadcast the event live.

 

However, my question is "would you rather watch a cheap low res image from a cell phone, or a professionally done hi-def production that was created by professionals"?  For me, there is no contest at all.  I'd gladly pay a fee to see or listen to the professional version as opposed to the amateur one.  Now if I'm a college student and I can't afford the professional, I might watch the amateur, but that's only because I couldn't afford the other.  That means I either watch the free one or I don't watch at all.

 

I think that the artist or whomever is being recorded would benefit somehow by allowing the "free/amateur" feed because it at least keeps their name/image in front of an audience that otherwise would get no exposure at all.

 

I also question "what if there was a robbery or a riot or some other type of crime where taking photos or video could be gravely important?"  This system would eliminate the potential for evidence.

 

Apple should give some serious consideration to the consequences before implementing this system.  I'm just sayin'...

Nickelodeon to Use Twitter to Tweet a SpongeBob Show

While I've never been a big fan of SpongeBob personally, you've got to give the guy credit for longevity.  I mean, cartoons on today's networks come & go pretty quickly but the little yellow guy has been around since 1999.  In today's environment, when you want to evolve & improve you've got to look to new ways to do it.  That used to mean expanding into toy & lunchbox sales.  Now, it means evolving into social media.
To that end, Nickelodeon has announced development of a SpongeBob storyline that is designed to unfold through several images & tweets over at least 4 days.
According to FoxNews:  The tweeted storyline, "The Ice Race Cometh: A Twitter-Tale," will begin next Tuesday and will conclude on Friday, July 15 -- leading into the new "SpongeBob" episode, "Frozen Face Off," airing 8 p.m. that night.

This is the first time that a TV show will use Twitter as part of its storyline.  While I won't be following the tweets... I do think this is an interesting use of social media!
