Lexi-Comp Purchased by Wolters Kluwer Health

Not sure what this means for Lexi-Comp.  I haven't had time to run down a comment from my contacts there yet.  My gut tells me it should be business as usual.  I'll let you know when I find out.

Sprint to Sell Motorola Xoom May 8th

I've had the Motorola Xoom for about a month now.  I got it as soon as it was available from Amazon.  It's a really great piece of hardware.  Now comes word that my hometown company Sprint will start selling the Wifi version on May 8th.
After about a month, I'm still struggling on iPad vs. Xoom.  The main winning point for me right now is the number of Apps the iPad has access to.  While Android continues to gain ground, the apps still don't seem as robust.  However, the hardware for the Xoom is amazing.  Also the integration of the OS is impressive.  While it doesn't truly multitask, it does a better job of bringing everything together than iOS at this point in time.  It's especially nice if you happen to be using gmail, Google calendar, etc as all of that is available almost the moment you enter your username & password.
So, I still can't declare a definite winner between my iPad ver 1.0 & the Xoom.  They are both great devices, but both hold some advantages over the other.

Sony Playstation Network is Hacked-User Info Stolen

If you haven't heard or if you don't have a Sony Playstation & play online, between April 17th and April 19th someone hacked into the global Playstation network and made off with quite a bit of info. It also brought the network to its knees keeping it offline since then and as of Wednesday it was still inaccessible.

It seems that the hacker or hackers potentially made off with: users' names, home addresses, email addresses, birthdates, PlayStation Network usernames and passwords, and answers to password security questions.

Here is the official word from Sony. At this point I'd be following the Playstation Blog pretty closely if I were a user. Also, Microsoft has reported to users that there have been Phishing attacks on its network. Needless to say, if you are your kids are users of any online gaming networks, it certainly is important to be aware of these types of security issues.

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

Cobra Tag lets your Android Phone Find Your Keys, Other Items

This is one of those nifty items that really can make your life easier without much effort on your part. Have you ever lost your keys or any other item? I know I have. The Cobra Tag simply attaches to your item and then can never be left behind. The 2 devices connect via BlueTooth and can be set so that if your tag goes outside the range (10m) it will ring.

You can also set either the tag to have your phone ring or vice versa if you are looking for your item & can't find it.

The cost is $60 and is only available for Android, but an iPhone app for this should be here this summer.

Sad News about Karen's Replicator

For several years now, I've written and recommended in my lectures a backup program called "Karen's Replicator".

The program, as well as many others, was a well written backup program that was reasonably priced and performed its job remarkably well.

Sadly, I received the following email yesterday and wanted to pass the info along to any of you who might be using Replicator and any other Karenware programs.

Dear Friends, I suspect that many of you have noticed that the last issue of Karen©s Power Tools Newsletter was dated March 17, 2010, and you may have been anxiously awaiting another. It is with great sadness that I write to tell you of Karen©s death on April 12, 2011, after a long struggle with several debilitations, including diabetes. I know that Karen touched many of you with her kindness, wit, creativity and encouragement. She was a loving daughter, sister, aunt and friend. And she was a pretty darned good programmer, too. We are deeply grieving her loss. For now, Karen©s server is still running, the programs she has written can still be downloaded, and donations can still be made through the website. We are also working to fill all CD orders that have been submitted or mailed. It is difficult to make business decisions while grieving. So, at this point, I cannot say what will be the future of KarenWare.com, except to say that we will certainly continue Karen©s commitment to safeguard your privacy as shown at the Privacy link of KarenWare.com. Many of you have already written many kinds words of condolence and comfort. Please know that we greatly appreciate you. If you care to make a contribution in her honor, she was a long-time supporter of The Dohnavur Fellowship, a special children©s ministry in southern India. Amazon Kindle to Have Library Lending in the Not Too Distant Future

Although Amazon is not saying "when" it will be available, it is now saying that being able to check out books from your local library is coming to the Kindle.
The best part for a lot of us, me included, is that you can do this with  your Kindle or the Kindle App on your favorite device.
It looks like 11,000 libraries will be on board with this, although they are all in the US at this time.  There is no word on exactly how this will work, but it's intriguing.  There are many books out there that I would like to read, but I don't really feel like buying.  Hopefully this new function will expand my mind with out narrowing my wallet.
I'll post more info on this as it becomes available.

Toshiba Announces Self Deleting Hard Drives

Here's a really interesting idea from the bright minds at Toshiba.  Hard drives that will erase themselves if installed in another machine.  Pretty cool if you ask me.  Here are the details:

Toshiba adds advanced access security, built-in hardware data encryption, and wipe technology features to its 2.5-inch, 7,200 RPM Serial ATA storage products with the MKxx61GSYG series hard disk drives. The self-encrypting drive (SED) provides government-grade AES-256 hardware encryption incorporated in the disk drive’s controller electronics. Based on the widely endorsed Opal Security Subsystem Class (Opal SSC) specification from the Trusted Computing Group** (TCG), the MKxx61GSYG enables secure host authentication, strong data encryption and data-theft prevention features on such systems as notebook or desktop PCs, multi-function printers, point-of-sale systems, thin clients and service kiosks. Toshiba expands on the Opal SSC by adding unique security features which may be used to “wipe” protected data from the disk or deny access to protected data if access credentials are invalid, for example, if the disk drive were to be removed from the host platform.

Targeted at security-sensitive applications, the drive’s built-in hardware encryption reduces compatibility concerns associated with software encryption, while delivering transparent performance gains and a lower total cost of ownership. Deployment is fast and secure because data is encrypted during normal write/read operations. Toshiba’s wipe technology features can significantly shorten re-purposing and data cleansing operations while helping to assure compliance with data security policy. The Toshiba AES-256 encryption algorithm is certified to FIPS 197 by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In addition, the Toshiba MKxx61GSYG SED provides features to enable secure remote administration, using such capabilities as Intel’s Active Management Technology (AMT).

The MKxx61GSYG is compatible with leading third party security management applications, allowing seamless deployment of SEDs alongside pre-existing software encryption. Unlike software encryption, which is dependent on CPU performance and system memory capacity, the MKxx61GSYG encrypts at full storage I/O speeds and scales seamlessly in multi-drive applications.

Oral cancer is a serious problem that requires involvement from the dental profession for early detection.  Statistics say that about 30,000 cases of oral cancer occur in the United States every year.  Because of the fact that about 50% of Americans only see a dental professional when they are in pain, many cases or oral cancer are found when they are in late stages simply because the patient isn't seen by a dentist on a regular basis.

Thanks to Goetze and MidWest... and Why It's Good to Have Friends







You know, sometimes it pays to have friends. For the past 10-12 months I've been working with the Stylus ATC from Midwest. I've been very impressed with the system. So much so that the latest article I have in this issue of Dental Products Report is about this system and the Azenic disposable handpiece.

I've been pushing the Stylus to its limits for the past several months and I've really grown dependent on it to help me do better dentistry. So you can imagine my dismay when yesterday I sat down and the handpeice would barely turn and certainly had no torque.

I routinely work with 2 high speed handpieces for any procedure, so I wasn't really limited in my ability to practice. I could just pick up the second handpiece and go to work. However, I really like the Stylus and I wanted it back as soon as possible.

I checked the airlines and could see no reason for the low power. I even had my Goetze Dental rep Gene take a look and he was at a loss as well. I decided to put a service call into Goetze so that a technician could get the Stylus repaired. However, Gene suggested we call the local Midwest rep, Angie. Gene, being a professional, had Angie's number in his cell.

This is where the luck part comes in. About an hour after Gene left a voicemail for her, Angie called me. This week she's been traveling with one of the engineers who helped design the Stylus. They arranged to come by the office on Wednesday morning and take a look at it.

It took all of 2 minutes for them to determine that the electronic "brain" that runs the Stylus had lost power. Somehow the power supply to the controller had become unplugged and when that happened, the device couldn't function. I was back online immediately.

So hats off to Goetze and Midwest. Everything is working as it is supposed to. It's good to have friends that provide this kind of customer service!

Counterfeit High End Audio Gear is One More Item in the Knock-off Market

We all know that you can get some pretty good fake watches if you have the right connections.  Oh, and most women know someone who owns a really good knock-off purse that was bought for pennies on the dollar.  These things aren't right, but over the years, we've grown used to them.  I'm not sayin' they're right,, I'm  just sayin".
Now, however stories are making it into the mainstream of counterfeit goods in the high end audio market.  I'm not talking about discounted MP3's, although that's also a problem, but the actual hardware that we use to listen to our music.
I just finished reading an article on wired.com, that goes into pretty good detail about this whole market on high end audio gear being undermined by pirated goods.
Of course, it's not just electronics or entertainment kinds of things that  are being pirated.  Almost any name brand type of good can be counterfeited.  And because of the proliferation of ecommerce sights, you can buy these goods easily and frequently without even knowing you're  not buying the real thing.
The real eye opener for me in the article was this: "According to a recent study put out by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, counterfeit goods could account for as much as 10 percent of China’s gross domestic product — third economy, holla! Worldwide, it’s regarded as $600 billion dollar industry, fully half of it in the United States."

Why I'm an Apple Fan and Why Travel Might Make You One Too...

When you travel as much as I do, you usually end up with more than a few travel stories.  Road warriors will sometimes sit around at meetings or even in airports swapping stories of terrible delays, missed flights, lost luggage, you  name it.  It's simply the law of averages, the more time you spend doing air travel, the more likely you are to have stories to tell.
So, let me share with you the latest tale of travel woe.  No, my flights were perfect.  2 non-stops that went without a hitch.  I even had wifi on the Southwest flight home.  No, Southwest did a great job of getting me to San Diego and back.  Today's travel horror happened in the San Diego airport when someone inadvertently bumped me while i was getting my MacBook Pro out of my computer bag.  My loyal laptop fell about 1 foot or so onto the floor of the airport as I was taking it out of my bag to place on the belt as I went through security.  It was such a small bump that I didn't even give it a second thought.  However, when I got to my gate and started it up, the screen was black... oh no.
I got back to KC and scheduled an appointment at the Apple Store Genius Bar.  There I got the bad news.  The screen was toast and there may well have been other damage.  The MacBook Pro was one of the original dual core machines and was 5 years old.  Now the question became how much do I put into technology that was around before Britney  Spears shaved her head.  After conferring with the geeks at the Genius Bar I decided to just bite the bullet and get a new laptop.
So this is the first post from the new machine.  a 750GB hard drive, quad-core processor, and 8 GB of RAM.  This is an amazing piece of equipment.  However, the best part is that it looks, acts, and is setup just like my old Mac.
One of the great things about Apple is their ability to transfer your data to a new machine and have it behave just like the old machine.  I explained to the folks at the store about my lecturing.  I told them I needed to be able to start a presentation and not worry that it would be different, melt down, not perform, etc.  They told me not to worry.
They also told me it would be ready on Sunday at 5:00.  Well Sunday at 2:00 they called and it was ready.  I went to the store, picked it up, and it is exactly the way they promised it would be.
So, thanks Apple.  You've met and exceeded my expectations yet again.  I appreciate it!

GlaxoSmithKline Email Database Hacked




In what has become an all to frequent occurrence, I received the following email form GSK yesterday. I give them kudos for being forthright and letting me know about the security breach. After all, this wasn't something they were responsible for as they had a third party vendor that was/is handling their email. Unfortunately, they will get the flack for it even though it truly was not under their control.

What I've taken away from the recent news stories and alerts I've received about these email security breaches, is that it's become rather obvious that spam is big business. I mean I suppose we've all known that... since we're inundated with these worthless emails on a daily basis, but now? It's got to be really profitable if they are willing to perform electronic break ins to grab viable addresses.

Here's an idea: Instead of using filters, alternate addresses, and the like, we just all agree to not respond to these stupid things? If no one bought into these scams or responded to them, there would be no financial incentive and soon the spam would stop.

Also, everyone needs to be very aware of security and be on the lookout for phishing scams. When it comes to security, the weakest link is usually the human using the computer. It's very easy to fall prey to phishing attacks if they happen to get you at the wrong time. I've heard many tales of people who were victimized when they were tired, working on a tight work deadline, etc and just let their guard down for a minute.

Amazon Cloud Drive Impresses So Far




On March 31, I made a post about the Amazon Cloud Drive. At the time I was simply reporting on the news... that Amazon was allowing users to purchase music from their MP3 store and then store those files online 'in the cloud' with free 5GB of storage. The Cloud Drive allows you to stream this music to your device via an app or browser as long as you have an Internet connection.

I've been an Amazon MP3 customer for several years now. I started with Amazon because they didn't encrypt their music. This meant I could buy a song and then listen to it on any device I owned. Over time as other services, like iTunes changes to this model, I stuck with Amazon, mainly to show loyalty for their effort to become the first to do it. They also have pretty tight integration with the Mac platform which, for me, is a nice feature.

This week I went to the Amazon MP3 store to grab a couple of songs and as I went through the process of authorizing my purchases, I was informed that my purchases would be stored on my Cloud Drive. Because I'm a frequent Amazon customer, I was upgraded to a 20GB account at no charge. Personally I thought that was great customer service.

The Cloud Drive is an impressive feature in my limited experience with it. When you make a purchase, the file is automatically added to your Cloud Drive. You also have the option of downloading it to your device, but if you aren't planning to be off the grid, I don't see much reason to. All your files are stored and backed up by Amazon and your collection is fully searchable.

Streaming is easy and even with a 3G wireless connection, the music sounded good and played back with no hiccups.

I put the Cloud Drive to a good test today. On Thursday I was in San Diego giving a lecture and flew home to KC early Friday morning. The Southwest flight I was on was Wifi enabled and for the low, low price of $5, I had Wifi for the entire journey halfway across the US.

While I was cruising along at 35,000 feet, I decided to buy a song and listen to it. The download was easy... and the playback? Crystal clear and smooth with no stalls or interruptions at all. Now to me, that was a pretty good test. The music had to go from Amazon to wherever the Southwest provider (Row44) has its satellite transmission equipment located. From there the signal is broadcast to a satellite which then retransmits the data to the Wifi equipped Southwest jet.

Sound complicated? It is... And yet Amazon and Southwest pulled it off nicely. So I'm recommending the Cloud Drive for music storage and playback, however do remember that I don't have hours and hours with it. I truly think this is an idea whose time has come.

Barry Bonds Guilty of Obstruction of Justice

Part of my bio in Dental Products Report states that I "blog about technology & life".  To that end, consider this a post about life.  I mean, I've been a baseball fan for almost my entire life and I love the expression "baseball is life, the rest is just details".  There are also a couple of really good life lessons one can learn about the whole "steroid scandal" in baseball.  Let's face it, lying is rarely a good idea.  Well, other than answering the question "do these jeans make my backside look big" I really can't come up with a truly good reason to just start lying from the get go.  Some of the baseball players from the steroid era did though... and I'm still trying to figure out exactly why they did.  Ignorance?  Panic?  The feeling that they are above having to answer?  Maybe all 3 of those plus some others?
While the greatness of players is always open to debate (that's one of the reasons I love the game) I doubt seriously that many would have debated the talent of Barry Bonds in the late 90's.  I ranked him as the greatest player of my generation and definitely in the top 10 of all time.  Now, of course, the situation has completely changed.
In the photo on the left, Bonds is built about like I was in high school.  Strangely enough, I never grew up to look like the picture on the right.  That, of course, is at the heart of the whole steroids thing... How could somebody change that much?  Especially with all the increased muscle mass.  Oh, and the skull continuing to grow didn't help stop the speculation either.
On Thursday, Bonds was convicted of lying to a grand jury on whether he received drugs that required a syringe.  Bonds, who became the poster child for steroid use among MLB players has always denied he took anything other than vitamins & flax seed oil.
What have we learned from all of this?  For me, it's that the American people and baseball fans in general are a very forgiving bunch.  If you admit you made a mistake (and who of us hasn't?) and then ask for forgiveness, we're pretty quick to say "all is forgiven".  However, if you choose instead to treat the public in a manner that suggests you are better/smarter than they are, you can pretty much kiss that forgiveness good-bye.
Lots of players have admitted steroid use and now are leading more or less normal lives.  Barry and Roger Clemens... not so much.

Learn About Dental Ozone in Upland, California

One of the really great things about writing and lecturing is all the great people I get to meet.  The travel is exciting at first... for about the first 15 minutes.  After that, it's really not that exciting.  Oh, the stories I could tell of being stuck with no way home & surviving on a Butterfinger (true story).  However, whining is not the point of today's post.

 

No, today's post is about ozone and one of my dearest friends, Dr. Bill Domb.  He is an amazingly bright fellow.  He's actually what I call a "renaissance man" and that's just about the highest compliment that I can give.  He's a tremendous outside the box thinker and also a really big giver of his time.  So... when Bill hosts an event you owe it to yourself to check it out.  Here's the latest from the wizard of Upland:

 

US Pathfinders Intro­Basic Ozone Course— APRIL 29­30, 2011

To all who have expressed interest in learning about the multitudinous uses of ozone in its many forms in dentistry, we are planning another two­day program: [ If you have someone new who needs the program, have them email me at bill@smilestudio.com The Next Basic courses will be: July 29­30; Oct 21­22.]

April 29­30 (Fri/Sat) 18 hr. CE credit.

8:30 AM to 4­ish on Friday. Zorbing. Group dinner. Then 8:30 AM to 5­ish on Saturday. This is a limited­enrollment program. The maximum number of new kits will be 12.Our objective is to have participants go home with a complete functioning ozone system ready to rock n roll on Monday morning.

This will be a primarily practical, not heavily theoretical course. Teaching and terminology level appropriate to docs and staff.

Sit­down lecture/dialogue time of the course will be around 5 hours. The rest is more practical and hands­on. Participants will, in advance, receive a three­DVD program from Julian Holmes giving more of the research underpinnings and an overview of ozone technology and applications. Also a disc of MP3 audios from a lecture by Eddie Lynch at Bertolotti’s seminar in Yosemite. Eddie and Julian wrote the book Ozone in Dentistry.It is expected that this series will be viewed at least once BEFORE coming to the practical program. Be sure to send me a snail address when you respond.

We may also be providing some preliminary online study that all will need to complete before coming to the course. This will help eliminate the difficulties of information overload.

The rest of the time will be spent actually putting together and using the ozone systems that you will take home. This will be a LIVE PATIENT PROGRAM. That means participants will observe and practice a variety of procedures such as desensitization, ozonation of caries, anesthetic reversal, treatment of perio, as well as bleaching and injections into soft tissue.

Cost: $4563 includes course and the full ozone generator system. Costs are for all hardware and course for one doc

and one staff member. Additional staff from the same office will be $563 each.Includes protocols manual, lunches, dinner on Friday night. Additional doctor FROM THE SAME OFFICE WILL BE $3357 (no kit).

You are encouraged to bring more staff/hygienists.That can really help your office get fully up to speed. We will limit the total number of people at the course, so if you are going to register staff, do it early! We stronglyencourage having at least some of your core staff, hygiene and assistants, at the course WITH you so they can be fully on board and not start off limping with the dentist having to be the implementer and instructor.

Committed and very experienced instructors are Mark Weiser, Eric Zaremski, Matt Menasco and Cris Duval. A key part of the process has Cris working specifically with staffers on the very practical applications of ozone water, gas and oils.

The whole program has minimally interventive dentistry at its core, and we talk quite a bit about all the other parts of dentistry that interdigitate with ozone. We believe they're inseparable.

CE credit 18 hrs. accepted for AGD renewal.

We are hoping that by this Basic Course our custom designed and built ozone generator system will be completed.It will have a crystal glass tube, be calibrated for several different concentrations, and incorporate an internal wireless control system. Our units are significantly more powerful and versatile than the $26,000+ HealOzone unit or $5K+ Lime Technologies units. It also runs on oxygen from its refillable tank and regulator (provided). You should be able to refill your own tank. Output is adjustable from max (used for caries sterilization, remineralization, treatment of lesions and perio purposes) to a calibrated low setting that is used to generate appropriate concentration gas for soft tissue injection.

We will set up making ozonated water and will do a very short introduction to oils. (The Therozone ($7K+) makes water at 4­9 mcg/ml; you should be able to achieve 16­20 mcg/ml with your system.) More detailed study of oil making will be available during our Advanced course, May 27­28.

Making and applying full­ and sectional­arch trays.

Ozone­activated accelerated tooth whitening.

Protocols for restorative, caries, perio, endo, oral surgery, lesions/oral medicine, TMD.

We will briefly demonstrate the Hach ozone concentration colorimetric measuring system as well as the Chemets test kit for checking ozonated water.

Pediatric regulator that can achieve the requisite 1/32 LPM flow rate.

Ozone catalytic converter to convert unused ozone back to oxygen.

Capabilities of generating ozonated water and ozonized oils.

Intertank transfer manifold to economically fill your small cylinder from a larger oxygen tank.

Safety trap.

Delivery handpieces: luer lock and cup types with thin bore hose.

Flip Video Unit Closed by Parent Company Cisco

About 18 months ago I was invited by the good folks at Curve Dental to take a look at their (back then) fairly new software.  As a gift for spending some time with them, the company gave me an orange Flip video camera complete with the Curve logo emblazoned on it.  At that point in time I'd seen & heard of Flip, but i'd never gotten my hands on one.
I was amazed at how easy the device was to use and how easy it was to carry.  It was small, affordable, and easy to work with.  Getting video off the thing and onto the web was almost easier than getting the video on it to begin with.
Before long I was seeing Flip cameras all over the place.  The HD was "good enough" and it made getting video memories easy.  The design including usage, the built-in USB plug, and the form factor made owning and using one a no brainer.  You charged them directly off the USB connection to your computer which meant all you needed on the trip was your computer & the camera; no cables for transfer or battery charging,
I'm still carrying mine.  It's almost always in a pocket of my Scottevest attire or in my Gendex messenger bag.  It's almost always within an arm's length from me.
Now comes word from Cisco, the parent company of Flip, that they are ceasing production & shutting down the company.  I find that incredibly interesting considering that Flip was purchased by Cisco 2 years ago for $590 million.  In fact, here is part of the press release from the day the deal was announced back in 2009:
"The acquisition of Pure Digital is key to Cisco's strategy to expand our momentum in the media-enabled home and to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking," said Ned Hooper, senior vice president of Cisco's Corporate Development and Consumer Groups. "Pure Digital has revolutionized the way people capture and share video with Flip Video. This acquisition will take Cisco's consumer business to the next level as the company develops new video capabilities and drives the next generation of entertainment and communication experiences."
So... while I'm sure that Cisco probably has some good business reasons for shelving Flip, I'm certainly going to miss them.  Frequently when a technology fails, you can understand why.  This is one of those times when I just don't get it.  I'll continue to use my Flip until it dies and I may just buy another as a backup... just in case.

For Windows, It's XP Down and Windows 7 Up

Here's an interesting tidbit that really piqued my interest.  As most of you know, I'm a confirmed "Mac Guy".  Now what that means is that I'm a big Mac fan and enthusiast, but I'm not a fanboy.  My affection for Apple is strictly built on the fact that they have good, ultra-reliable stuff... and it just flat out works.  No muss, no fuss.  However, I'm also a practical guy and I will state for the record that we're talking about computers and that all of them are susceptible to problems.  It just seems in my experience that Macs suffer fewer of them.
Now, I'm also (at least I'd like to believe I am) a practical guy and I understand that there are going to be situations where I need a program run and it's only available on Windows.  LIke... oh... I don't know... like my dental office.  I happen to be an Eaglesoft user and I have been for years.. not quite 20... but close.  It runs my office and I can't get it to run on a Mac.  The same goes for my 3D cone beam imaging software.  I happen to run iCat VisionQ and Anatomage Invivo to capture and read the 3D scans we are routinely taking in my office with the Gendex CB-500HD.  Neither of those programs will run on a Mac either.
As I've delved further & further into the world of 3D imaging,  I've found myself needing more computer horsepower to quickly render, view, and enhance the computer generated images.  Because of that, this past December, I decided to put a new machine at my desk in the dental office.  I had managed to skip the entire Windows Vista era, demanding instead that my Windows machines be built with an XP install.  This ensured that every computer in my professional world functioned exactly like every other computer.  There is something to be said for consistency and I prefer to have machines in my office that we can all use without having to think "how do I open the browser on this one?"
However, this time the new machine came with Windows 7.  I had done some research, being the good geek, and I'd concluded that the risk was worth it.  I wanted to run the 64 bit OS so that I could have access to extended memory and some other features.  I'm pleased to say that in the 3 1/2 months since receiving it, I have had zero... that's right... zero system crashes, freezes, or blue screens.  Let me restate that.  The Windows 7 operating system is really, really stable.  It also has some very nice features, making it a bit "Mac like" although that probably makes the Microsoft engineers stomachs turn.
Of course, the point of this post isn't to tell you how great and stable Windows 7 is, it's really to tell you how popular the OS is becoming.  You may not remember, but Microsoft Vista was heckled and had doubts cast its way before it was even on the shelves.  Customers stayed away in droves and before long, OEM's like Dell were offering customers the choice of having Windows Vista or Windows XP as the default install on a new system. Windows Vista just never took off while customers like me continued to order systems running XP.
Now, look at the chart at the top of this post and what you'll see is the fact that it seems that lots of people are having the same type of experience with Windows 7 that I have had.  Due to that fact, while Vista continues to fall like a stone, Windows 7 continues to grow.  Also of interest is the top line in the graph that features XP.  From the slopes of the graph, one can estimate that sometime in the not too distant future, Windows 7 will overtake XP.
So if you have been considering a new system, but have been hesitant to make the jump for fear of the dragons of Vista and 7, take it from me, Windows 7 has proven itself.  The last 12 months have seen it almost triple its presence and it continues a steady growth due to its stability & ease of use... and that's coming from a Mac guy!

Why Birthdays Can Be Deceiving...

As you probably know (and if you don't... you will), at some point birthdays tend to lose their luster.  Well, maybe not lose their luster, but they just aren't as big a deal for me as they used to be.  Now, of course I'm really glad I'm not room temperature, however, my enthusiasm has waned a bit as the years have piled up... or on, as the case may be.
So this year, when the 'ol b-day rolled around, it turns out that I was booked to do a lecture for the Central New England Dental Research Group about 1.5 hours outside Boston.  The best part?  It was a function presented by myself and my lecturing buddies Marty Jablow and Paul Feuerstein.  Combined we are called "Dental Technology Solutions".  The NEDRG had asked us to do a program all day Friday and 1/2 day on Saturday, with Saturday coinciding with my birthday.
Now I like my birthday, but I'm not one to make a big deal about it... especially when I'm with people that don't know about it.  So I ended up in the Boston area keeping the secret to myself.
On Wednesday the office surprised me with a big celebration.  Since I was traveling to Boston on Thursday, I wasn't going to be in the office.  I was expecting the staff to celebrate after I got back... not before I left.  They decorated the office and met me as I drove into the parking lot.  They ALL were standing in the front yard waving as I pulled in.  They provided a barbecue lunch for me in the conference room.  They also got me 2 tickets to a White Sox game in Chicago... right behind home plate.  Wow!
I was hoping that I could keep this to a low profile on the trip.  Of course, it's really hard to keep a secret from your friends.  Somehow Marty and Paul figured it out.  It didn't help either that some dear friends at Gendex found out either.  At our first break on Saturday morning, Paul announced to the group that it was my birthday.  During the morning session, the John the Gendex Rep had snuck out and purchased a balloon bouquet as well as a potpourri of gag gifts.  I was presented with a slice of cake and some great baseball related gifts.
Then... the geek part of the birthday began.  My Facebook account suddenly lit up as word got out.  At about the same time, my personal email account began to receive well wishes.  I received lots of very special and touching messages from all sorts of great people.
When we had finished our lecturing, we left for downtown Boston.  Marty and I both had early flights on Sunday so we stayed close to Logan airport.  We spent the afternoon and early evening wandering around Boston seeing the sites and enjoying the crowds.  It was awesome.  Of course anytime I'm wandering around any where with Paul & Marty there are good times.  No less than 5 times we all laughed about something til we cried.
We finished off the night with dinner at Legal Seafood which is one of my 10 favorite restaurants in the world.  When we arrived the wait was a 1  hour minimum which Paul, of course, managed to change to about 3 minutes.  I started with lobster bisque and then finished off a 2 1/2 pound lobster and some Boston Cream Pie.  How I managed to eat all that, well I'll probably never know.
So it just goes to show... here I was thinking that I'd maybe get a little celebration on Monday and I've been livin' the dream for the past 96  hours.  This was one of the best birthdays ever and I didn't even expect anyone to know.
So thanks to all of  you who helped make it so special.  Often we don't get a chance to really realize how blessed we are to have friends.  Me?  I'm grateful to have been given that chance.  I'm never going to forget this one.  Ever.  That's how special you all made it.  Thank you!!!

Pandora Ap Does Indeed Send User Data

In a lawsuit filed against the company, it's come to light that the Pandora Ap sends into out.  Now, they never claimed that they didn't, but now it's officially out.
It sends the user's birth date, gender, Android ID, and GPS information were all being sent to various advertising companies.  The situation here has so far only been proven to exist on Android, but the possibility obviously exists for iOS as well.
As of this writing, Pandora has yet to respond.
For the record, I'm a Pandora user and I doubt this will affect my usage.  However, I thought you dear readers should be aware of it.

The Institue of Emergency Medical Procedures released this alert which I think bears reading by off of you in healthcare who read the blog:

 

FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that FDA continues to receive reports of methemoglobinemia, a serious and potentially fatal adverse effect, associated with benzocaine products both as a spray, used during medical procedures to numb the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, and benzocaine gels and liquids sold over-the-counter and used to relieve pain from a variety of conditions, such as teething, canker sores, and irritation of the mouth and gums.

BACKGROUND: Methemoglobinemia is a rare, but serious condition in which the amount of oxygen carried through the blood stream is greatly reduced. In the most severe cases, methemoglobinemia can result in death. Patients who develop methemoglobinemia may experience signs and symptoms such as pale, gray or blue colored skin, lips, and nail beds; headache; lightheadedness; shortness of breath; fatigue; and rapid heart rate. Methemoglobinemia has been reported with all strengths of benzocaine gels and liquids, and cases occurred mainly in children aged two years or younger who were treated with benzocaine gel for teething. The signs and symptoms usually appear within minutes to hours of applying benzocaine and may occur with the first application of benzocaine or after additional use. The development of methemoglobinemia after treatment with benzocaine sprays may not be related to the amount applied. In many cases, methemoglobinemia was reported following the administration of a single benzocaine spray.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Benzocaine products should not be used on children less than two years of age, except under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional.
  • Adult consumers who use benzocaine gels or liquids to relieve pain in the mouth should follow the recommendations in the product label. Consumers should store benzocaine products out of reach of children. FDA encourages consumers to talk to their healthcare professional about using benzocaine.
  • Read the two Drug Safety Communications below for other specific recommendations for Healthcare Professionals, for Consumers and Caregivers and the Data Summary which supports these recommendations.

FDA is continuing to evaluate the safety of benzocaine products and the Agency will update the public when it has additional information. FDA will take appropriate regulatory actions as warranted.

Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events, side effects, or product quality problems related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:

Darby Dental Supply and American Red Cross Molloy College Campus Club Send Supplies to Devastated Japan

Here's another effort to help those stricken by the disaster in Japan...

 

Much-Needed Medical Supplies Sent Directly to Makeshift Shelter in Kesennuma

Jericho, NY (April 6, 2011) – Darby Dental Supply, LLC, the largest all-telesales national distributor of dental merchandise, recently partnered with students from the American Red Cross Molloy College Campus Club to create a 30’ container of much-needed medical supplies for an area in Japan that was devastated by the recent earthquake and tsunami.

 

The container included essential medical emergency items such as isolation gowns, gloves, and face masks.  The supplies were shipped overseas directly to a temporary shelter set up in an elementary school in Kesennuma, Japan, located in the extreme northeast of Miyagi Prefecture.  The Kesennuma area was hit especially hard by the recent earthquakes and tsunami, and was further devastated by the fires that broke out in the area following the two natural disasters.

 

“Through our contact, Ms. Junko Fujiwara, we were able to ship supplies directly to the shelter,” remarked Darby President, Gary Rosenberg.  “We would not have been able to work as efficiently as we did without the help of the American Red Cross Molloy College Campus Club, who put many hours into organizing and assembling the massive container of supplies.”

 

Due to its wide array of healthcare products readily on hand, Darby was able to pull from its vast inventory to provide a large number of medical supplies for medical professionals to properly attend to victims affected by the tragedies.

 

Darby’s recent donation to Japan is just one of many ongoing philanthropic efforts conducted by the company.  Darby has also long supported U.S. troops deployed overseas, including a recent generous donation of various hygiene items sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Moreover, for the past five years, Darby has had a Full Pay Deployment Program in place for its own National Guard and Reserve member employees.  The program also ensures that their jobs will be waiting for them when they return.
