ClearCorrect, Inc. Doubles the Size of its Houston Headquarters Due to Increased Demand for its Transparent Orthodontic Aligners

Houston, TX – September 29, 2009 – ClearCorrect, Inc. recently completed a major expansion of its corporate headquarters due to the increased demand for its FDA-cleared transparent orthodontic aligners, commonly known as clear braces or invisible braces.

Palm updates Pre WebOS to Version 1.2

As most of you know, I have a Palm Pre and have been enjoying using the Sprint competitor to the iPhone. For the second day in a row, I'll make a post concerning the Pre.

Yesterday Palm released version 1.2 of their WebOS. I'm glad to see Palm in continuing to push out new improvements. For those of you with a Pre, you can get this by going to "Updates" in the launcher or it will most likely download automatically over the network in the next few days. Here are the ins & outs of the new update from Palm:

For starters, we’ve beefed up Palm Synergy to include LinkedIn contact syncing. Info from LinkedIn profiles (like job titles) will now appear in your Palm Pre contacts. The new update also facilitates links across more different flavors of IM contacts. Business-oriented webOS 1.2 customers will also appreciate support for heterogeneous EAS policies (for workplaces with a mix of end-users in which some accounts support EAS policies and others don’t).

And we heard your feedback on a number of topics loud and clear:
  • We know you love email -- and you’ll really love the ability to filter the emails in the current folder just by typing a search term.
  • You asked for the ability to download files in the browser -- and now you’ve got it.
  • Music fans will be glad to hear that the Amazon MP3 Store can now download songs from either WiFi or WAN.
  • You can now tap a phone number in a calendar note to dial it (so you can get to the joy of music-on-hold for your conference calls even faster!).
  • Pause a podcast and, by default, you’ll pick up where you left off when you unpause.

Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack Rules on the Road

My travel schedule this week is going to be a little crazy, so bear with me as my postings here on the blog my be a bit hit and miss. They will return to my usual schedule starting next week. Hopefully I can make my usual post per day, but unfortunately I can't guarantee it this week.

Today's post is about my love for my Oakley Kitchen Sink backpack. As most of you know, I spend a fair amount of my time on the road. Airports and planes have a way of wearing on you (if you don't believe it... give it a try) not to mention wearing on your gear. Over the last 5 years I think I've gone through 5 different bags or backpacks. All of them succumbed to being overloaded and stuffed under plane seats or wedged into overhead compartments. Inevitably the seams would rip or tear and then the problems would start.

Finally this last Christmas I received the Oakley Kitchen Sink backpack. The bag gets its name from the fact that it has all the features of every other Oakley backpack. I've been using it since January and it still looks like it just came off the assembly line. It has taken a serious beating the last 9 months and just keeps looking great. Add to that the amazing good looks that get me at least 2 compliments per trip and as far as I'm concerned, Oakley is my backpack provider for life! If you are tired of putting up with less, get the best!

Is Microsoft Readying a new Tablet called "Courier"

According to the folks over at Gizmodo, the gang in Redmond is working on something Tablet like but way different than any Tablet we've seen before.

Called Courier, the device looks like a book, but is being called a "booklet". Supposedly it is in the late development stages at Microsoft. The device has 2 screens that will be touch and stylus activated. The 2 screens will allow the user to drag and drop between them and oh so much more.

It appears to be a cross between the ideas behind the iPhone and Palm Pre while keeping with the idea of a fully functional and usable computer.

There is a video available for viewing at Gizmodo, and I highly recommend checking it out. Once you've viewed the promo video you'll have a much better idea of what it can do. I can certainly see ways that Courier could help in my life. No idea on when it will be available... dang it!

Wacom Bamboo now available in a Touch Version

For several years now, I've been a fan of the Wacom company. The company makes input "slates" that allow you to draw or manipulate the screen/software with a simulated pen device. This is especially handy in a clinical environment when you want to draw on a radiography or photo so that the patient has a better understanding of their situation. Now the company has released their Bamboo product with another cool feature. In addition to input from the "pen" you can also control the curser, draw, etc with your finger. That's right, the "slate" now functions like the touchpad of your favorite laptop. Bamboo is available from most major electronics retailers and works great in a dental environment. I have a Bose SoundDock and I absolutely love it. It allows me to play my iPod and crank the tunes when the moment calls for it. Bose is a great company with great products and they are always innovating. Hence this post about their latest creation.

Amazon to expand it's line of Private Label Products



Although Amazon has always had a few products that they private label, the list is about to expand. The idea of these types of products for any company is 2 fold. First of all it expands brand recognition which is sort of like free advertising. The second is that it allows a company to generate revenue on products that they have no expenses in other than branding.

Over the years, Amazon has branded a few products like power tools and patio furniture, but now the company is looking at expanding the Amazon brand with a line called "Amazon Basics". Currently the line only contains backup mediums like blank CD's and DVD's, home theater cabling, and replacement cables for your gadgets. While the company will expand the line in the future, there is no word on how much or how big it will get.

For me, the best part of this is that Amazon is advertising frustration-free packaging. From their website, here is the description:

Smashing Pumpkins to Release Next Album in October... for Free

It seems that more and more big name artists are foregoing the traditional route of music distribution. On September 17th, Smashing Pumpkins announced they will be giving away their music on the Internet. The album entitled 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' will feature 44 songs and will all be given away free. Here's the lowdown from Smashingpumpkins.com

Recording began yesterday, September 15th, 2009 on the new record which will be entitled 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope'. The album will feature 44 songs, 4 of which are now being recorded. My desire is to release a song at a time beginning around Halloween of this year, with each new release coming shortly after until all 44 are out. Each song will be made available absolutely for free, to anyone anywhere. There will be no strings attached. Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish.

We will however sell highly limited edition EP's (of 4 songs each times 11), and details of how those EP's will be made available are still being worked out. Because the songs themselves will be free, the EP's will be more like collectors items for the discerning fan who will want the art itself, along with the highest possible audio quality available. The EP's will be more like mini-box sets rather than your normal cd single. We may also offer other variations for sale, say for example a digital single with a demo version of a song. The commitment that is most important is the one I'm making to you: that the music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' will be available for free to everyone. All 44 songs: free for ALL.

When the entire album is finished, it will be compiled into a deluxe box set which will also be made available for sale. Those who have bought the EP's need not worry, as the box set will not be a recompilation of the limited edition pieces.

The story of the album is based on 'The Fool's Journey', as signified in the progress of the Tarot. It is my intention to approach this by breaking down the journey of our life here into four phases as made by these different characters; the Child, the Fool, the Skeptic, and the Mystic.

The music of 'Teargarden by Kaleidyscope' harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins: atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty.

I already have 53 songs written for the record, so I am quite confident that I already have much of the material that I would need to undertake such an extensive project. I am very committed to seeing this album through to its completion and very, very excited about the prospect of delivering new Smashing Pumpkins music to you in a unique and exciting way.

Curve Dental wants to Change Dental Software

For the past 2 days I've been spending some time in Utah, with the team from Curve Dental. They have a "Fresh, Web Based Alternative to Dental Software".

The basic premise for Curve Dental is to provide dental practice management software over the Internet using a web browser and some amazing Web 2.0 programming. The result is dental software that can run a practice using only an Internet connection and a web browser.

It doesn't matter whether you are running Mac, PC, or Linux. It doesn't matter if you are in the office or at home. The software runs "in the cloud". Although I haven't gotten all the financial details yet, they are looking at a monthly subscription fee with additional dollars for training and conversion.

I saw a live demo last night done on a wireless connection and I was flat out amazed at the speed at which it functioned as well as the forethought that went into the design.

Imagine never having to install an update again (it's all done by Curve on their servers). Imagine never having to buy a server for the office again. Imagine the possibilities when all of your practice can be run through a website.

Curve told me when they invited me that I was going to see the "next big thing" when I got here. I feel they've proved their point.

There is still work to do and things to add, but the team at Curve is on the right track. The Curve team is full of dental software veterans and some outside the box thinkers. I'm expecting big things from them... and I'm not always easily impressed.

Trimara Improves Identafi 3000

I've been using the Trimara device for a few months now and the one thing I've wanted is for the device to be brighter. I'm happy to say that the folks at Trimara were listening when I was talking to them. I love when companies listen to their customers. I also love it when companies continue to improve products. Why I'm still Loving my Palm Pre

While you iPhone lovers gasp and grab the nearest cold drink to calm your nerves, let me explain. As I've said before, I'm the iPhone target market and could easily and gladly be an iPhone user. However, I live and practice in the city that is the world headquarters of Sprint and I have many Sprint employees as patients. They show loyalty to me... I show loyalty to them. Before I get more of those "hater" e-mails from Apple fans, this is not a bash of the iPhone. It's instead praise on a company that is doing somethings very well.

Loyalty aside, Palm has really hit on something with the Pre. Today I'm going to give a quick overview on one feature that I'm grateful for and that many people considering the device may not know about.

If you've been a Palm user in the past, you may very well be considering the Pre as your next phone. In the early days of the "Palm Pilot", Palm may not have invented the idea of synching your data, but they sure as heck perfected it in the late 90's and early 2000's. As you remember, just plug your device into a USB port on the computer, press the button, and presto all of your data is moved back and forth between computer and device. This made sure that everything was the same on both and made keeping track of your life about as simple as possible. Of course, if you were on the road and forgot the cable... well that could make things difficult i.e. impossible to synch.

Now let's discuss the Pre's answer to this. It occurred to me the other day that I now have no need to synch. "Why" you ask? It's simple. The Web OS that Palm developed and put in the Pre uses the "cloud" of the Internet to synch. Let me explain. As a Mac user, I happen to use the Mac default calendar called iCal. However, I also use Google calendar to have access to my data from any computer. I bought and use a program called "Spanning Synch" that keeps my data on my Mac and Google synched. Anytime a change is made, Spanning Synch makes sure it is on both calendars.

When I bought the Pre I simply configured the calendar to use Google Calendar as the default on the new device. Once I had entered my username and password the Pre went to the Net (seamlessly and in the background) and downloaded all that info to my device. A few minutes after setting it up, all of my calendar info was magically on my device. Same with my contacts. Spanning Synch also synchs all of my contacts from my Mac Address Book to my Google contacts. Once the calendar info was there, I set Google as my default contacts profile. Poof! My contacts appeared on my phone.

When I add or change calendar or contacts on my Pre, within a few seconds those changes are wireless sent to Google and the next time my Mac has a Net connection, those changes are synched to it as well.

The magic for me is that all of this is done automatically and transparently in the background. I never synch because I don't' have to.

Congrats to Palm. I thought you were down and out, but I'm happy to admit I was wrong.

Impressions from CDA North

Yesterday was a long day of travel for me.  Coming back from the west coast and losing 2 hours always makes the trip seem longer.  Here are some thoughts on what I saw during the show in San Francisco.

 

Traffic in the exhibit hall was good on Friday and Saturday.  At this meeting I was in the Gendex booth giving talks and answering questions about their state of the art CB-500 cone beam unit so I didn't get a chance to gauge attendance at the courses.  However Saturday was very busy and I was told that Friday (my travel day) was even better.  Sunday attendance at the exhibits was light, but the show only ran until 2:00 p.m. and perhaps many local doctors chose not to drive into the city.

 

Vendors were overall happy with attendance and sales.  Orders were being written and doctors were showing interest in spending money on both large and small dollar items.

 

Air Techniques reported tremendous interest in their Spectra caries detection device as did the suppliers who were selling it.  The Air Tech people reported to me they even installed the software and had it running on a Cerec AC acquisition unit making it available to check for complete caries removal when doing Cerec restorations.  I also plan on doing an unboxing video of the Spectra device shortly which I will post here when I get it complete.  A pretty busy schedule for the next few days may mean it doesn't appear until next week, but I'll do my best.

 

Dexis launched its Platinum sensor to much fanfare and it was well received both by current Dexis users and interested buyers.

 

Overall it appears to me that the fear of a worsening economy continues to wane.  Many doctors reported that their schedules are picking up and that they are optimistic about the future.  I even heard unconfirmed reports of a substantial increase in doctor registrations for the upcoming ADA meeting in Hawaii.

 

Overall it was a good meeting.  The folks at the CDA always do a great job and this was no exception.  For those of you who took the time to come by the Gendex booth and listen to my talk, thank you!

Yesterday afternoon (09-01-09) Google's free e-mail service, G-mail went offline for about 1 hour 45 minutes. Although Google keeps its user numbers close to the vest, it's estimated that more than 149 million users are getting e-mail through the service. When the system was unavailable, all of those people lost their e-mail. To put it in perspective, that's about 1/2 the population of the United States.

To make matters worse, Google also sells the G-mail service to businesses at a cost of $50 per user. The idea is that it's more cost effective to farm it out than to have to employ an IT department to keep you e-mail humming along. Of course all of those paying customers were down for the duration as well.

While there is no indication yet of what caused the outage, there was one Twitter account claiming responsibility, but that cannot be confirmed.

More importantly this shows how dependent we can be on Google or some of the other big e-mail providers (Microsoft and Yahoo actually have even more users). For those dependent on e-mail for work, such an outage can be a costly one.

Are there ways to prevent this in the future? Probably. I can pretty much guarantee that Google is asking that same question and looking for answers. Today was one of those days I'm glad I have my own domain and my own e-mail server.

Twisted Files by Sybron Endo - A True Case Story



Twisted Files from Sybron Endo have been on the market for about 18 months and are enjoying good sales and a high degree of confidence from users. They are rotary endo files designed to make cleaning and shaping the root canal system faster, easier, and with less stress for the both the patient and the doctor.

I've been using TF's since before they were available to the buying public at large and I'm very happy/impressed with the way they handle and do their job. I use a hybrid technique that employs different file systems for different cases, but TF's are almost always part of the regimen.

What makes Twisted Files different is in their manufacture. For years endodontic files have been manufactured by machining/cutting a wire to create the lands and flutes. While this is efficient it also creates stresses in the files and can create microscopic weaknesses that can cause them to break during treatment. While this does happen from time to time during a procedure and is in no way a reflection on the care provided, it is stressful for both the patient and the doctor.

Twisted Files are made by twisting the nickel titanium wire to create the working surface instead of the aforementioned cutting. This process makes the files more flexible and less likely to break. Instead, the files have a tendency to "unwind" as seen in the picture above. Whenever a file is removed, the operator should carefully inspect it for unwinding and discard it if unwinding is present.

The file in the photos above was from a clinical case done yesterday. It was a 2 appointment molar with CaOH in the roots to facilitate healing. When negotiating the distal canal, there was some type of obstruction, probably a small crumb from the temporary filling or a small piece of tooth debris. I re-obtained working length to a 25 hand file and then went in with the TF .08. I was anticipating a smooth glide path, but in the area where the blockage had been the file grabbed at something. Never force a file - is great advice so I removed the file to inspect it and to do more work with hand files. Upon inspection, I saw what you see above... a nice unwinding right at the tip. The file did exactly what it was designed to do; unwinding instead of fracturing. The area where this occurred was about 3/4 of the way to the apex so it would have been a difficult retrieval.
